The explanatory sequential design (QUAN → qual) is appropriate when your quantitative results need qualitative explanation and when you have the timeline to conduct two sequential phases. The exploratory sequential design (QUAL → QUAN) is appropriate when no validated instrument exists for your construct. Embedded designs are most common in clinical and organizational research. The choice must be driven by your research questions and the relationship between your strands — not by convenience or personal preference.
Does the qualitative sample need to be the same as the quantitative sample? +
Not necessarily — and this is one of the most important design decisions in mixed methods. In convergent designs, using the same participants for both strands facilitates stronger integration (directly comparing each participant’s survey responses and interview accounts) but may introduce reactivity if both data types are collected simultaneously. Using different samples from the same population allows each strand to be designed optimally for its method but introduces comparability questions at the integration stage. In explanatory sequential designs, qualitative participants are typically selected purposively from the quantitative sample, often to represent specific outcome groups. Whatever your sampling decision, it must be explicitly justified in the Methods section.
How long is a mixed methods dissertation chapter (Chapter 3)? +
