What a Properly Written Methodology Section Must Include
Many students write methodology sections that function as procedural lists: “a survey was administered to 50 participants; the data were analyzed in SPSS.” This is insufficient for any graduate-level paper and will attract examiner comments about lack of justification. A methodology section at master’s or doctoral level must do several things simultaneously: situate the design within a philosophical paradigm (positivist, interpretivist, pragmatist, critical), justify the choice of research design against available alternatives, specify the sampling strategy and justify it against the population of interest, describe the data collection instruments and their reliability and validity, specify the analysis approach and demonstrate that assumptions are satisfied, and address ethical considerations in collecting and handling the data.
Each of these elements requires citation of methodological literature — not just the description of what was done, but the justification of why it was done with reference to scholars who have established when each approach is appropriate. For positivist quantitative studies, the standard references include Creswell & Creswell, Field, Pallant, and Cohen. For interpretivist qualitative research, the relevant methodologists include Braun & Clarke (thematic analysis), Moustakas (phenomenology), Strauss & Corbin and Charmaz (grounded theory), and Yin (case study). We cite these correctly and apply their frameworks substantively rather than superficially.
The Research Philosophy Layer — Why It Matters
Graduate and doctoral research papers increasingly require students to situate their work within a philosophical paradigm before specifying the design. The three-layer framework — ontology (what is the nature of reality), epistemology (what counts as valid knowledge), and methodology (how knowledge should be generated) — provides the foundation for every subsequent design decision. A positivist ontology (reality exists independently of the observer) supports an epistemology of objective measurement, which supports a quantitative methodology. When a student claims to be investigating “lived experience” while using a structured questionnaire with pre-defined response categories, the ontological and methodological layers are in direct conflict. Validity, Reliability, and Trustworthiness
Validity and reliability are the foundational quality criteria for quantitative research; trustworthiness is the equivalent framework for qualitative research. Correctly applying these concepts — and distinguishing between them — is a baseline requirement for any research paper that includes a methodology section.
For quantitative studies, internal validity refers to the confidence with which a causal inference can be drawn from the study design. External validity refers to the generalizability of findings beyond the study sample. Construct validity refers to whether the measurement instruments actually measure the intended constructs. Reliability refers to the consistency of measurement across time, raters, and contexts. We address each of these in the methodology section with specific reference to how the study design minimizes threats to each type of validity — not with generic statements that “this study is valid and reliable.”
For qualitative studies, Lincoln and Guba’s four criteria — credibility (confidence in the truth of the findings), transferability (applicability to other contexts), dependability (consistency of the process), and confirmability (neutrality of the findings) — replace the positivist validity framework. We document credibility through member checking, prolonged engagement, and triangulation; demonstrate transferability through thick description; establish dependability through a research audit trail; and address confirmability through reflexivity statements.
Ethical Considerations in Research Design
Research ethics are a formal component of most methodology sections at graduate level and above, not an afterthought. The relevant ethical principles — informed consent, voluntary participation, confidentiality, data security, right to withdraw, protection from harm — must be addressed specifically in relation to the study design. A study collecting sensitive health data has different ethical obligations than one analyzing publicly available government statistics. We specify the relevant ethical framework (Belmont Report for US-based research, Helsinki Declaration for medical research, British Psychological Society guidelines for psychology research) and address how the study design satisfies each of its requirements.

Why Assumption Testing Is Non-Negotiable
Every inferential statistical test rests on a set of assumptions about the data. Violating those assumptions does not simply produce less accurate results — it can produce results that are entirely meaningless. A t-test assumes normally distributed data in each group; if this assumption is severely violated, the reported p-value may bear no relationship to the actual probability distribution of the test statistic. An ANOVA assumes homogeneity of variance across groups; if Levene’s test indicates this assumption is violated, the standard F-statistic may be inflated or deflated depending on the pattern of variance inequality.

Means and standard deviations are reported for each group. Tables follow APA format with no vertical lines, specific heading levels, and notes below the table rather than titles embedded within it.
