What a Properly Written Methodology Section Must Include

Many students write methodology sections that function as procedural lists: “a survey was administered to 50 participants; the data were analyzed in SPSS.” This is insufficient for any graduate-level paper and will attract examiner comments about lack of justification. A methodology section at master’s or doctoral level must do several things simultaneously: situate the design within a philosophical paradigm (positivist, interpretivist, pragmatist, critical), justify the choice of research design against available alternatives, specify the sampling strategy and justify it against the population of interest, describe the data collection instruments and their reliability and validity, specify the analysis approach and demonstrate that assumptions are satisfied, and address ethical considerations in collecting and handling the data.

Each of these elements requires citation of methodological literature — not just the description of what was done, but the justification of why it was done with reference to scholars who have established when each approach is appropriate. For positivist quantitative studies, the standard references include Creswell & Creswell, Field, Pallant, and Cohen. The Research Philosophy Layer — Why It Matters

Validity, Reliability, and Trustworthiness

Validity and reliability are the foundational quality criteria for quantitative research; trustworthiness is the equivalent framework for qualitative research. For quantitative studies, internal validity refers to the confidence with which a causal inference can be drawn from the study design. Ethical Considerations in Research Design

Research ethics are a formal component of most methodology sections at graduate level and above, not an afterthought. The relevant ethical principles — informed consent, voluntary participation, confidentiality, data security, right to withdraw, protection from harm — must be addressed specifically in relation to the study design. A study collecting sensitive health data has different ethical obligations than one analyzing publicly available government statistics.
