Constructing a Thesis That Actually Drives Analysis
The thesis statement is the single most important sentence in an analytical essay. It is not a topic statement. It is not a statement of intention. It is a specific, arguable, evidence-dependent interpretive claim that every paragraph in the essay exists to support, complicate, or qualify.

Identify Your Subject and the Specific Aspect to Analyse
Broad topics produce vague theses. Narrow your subject to a specific element: not “Shakespeare’s tragedies” but “the function of the soliloquy in Hamlet‘s Act III.” The more precisely you identify what you are analysing, the more analytical force your thesis can carry.
Formulate Your Interpretive Question

Analysing Evidence
