This distinction is the foundation of the service, and coaches are trained to redirect toward teaching rather than complete a task on a student’s behalf, even when asked directly.

Yes. Many students book coaching around a single chapter they’re stuck on, without committing to ongoing support for the entire dissertation. This works well if you’ve written most chapters independently but need targeted help with a specific section, such as justifying a methodology choice or restructuring a literature review that reads as a list rather than a synthesis.

Yes. Tutors work with you inside SPSS, R, STATA, or SAS for quantitative analysis, or NVivo, MAXQDA, and ATLAS.ti for qualitative coding. You bring your own data set and research questions, and the tutor walks through which tests are appropriate, how to check the underlying assumptions, and how to read and report the resulting output — with you running the analysis, not the tutor running it for you.

Coaching is available across disciplines, including education, psychology and counseling, nursing and other health sciences, business and management, computer science and engineering, the social sciences, the humanities, and law and public policy. Each student is matched to a coach whose academic background fits both their subject area and their research methodology.

Yes. Defense coaching includes practice question-and-answer sessions built around the specific content of your study, feedback on the slide deck you’ve built, and guidance on how to respond to committee questions about your methodology, findings, and limitations. The goal is that you walk into the defense room having already thought through the questions you’re most likely to be asked.

Coaching limited to explanation, feedback, and skill-building is comparable to the support many universities already provide through writing centers, statistics labs, and faculty mentors. Policies on outside academic support differ by institution and sometimes by program, so we encourage every student to review their university’s academic integrity policy and, where their program expects it, disclose the use of coaching support to their advisor or committee.

Coaches review drafts of IRB and ethics board applications and explain what reviewers commonly look for in areas like informed consent language, participant recruitment procedures, data storage security, and risk classification. You revise your own application based on that feedback; the coach does not draft or submit it on your behalf.

You can book a single session or set up a recurring weekly or biweekly block, timed around your own writing pace and your advisor’s feedback cycle. A common pattern is booking a session shortly after receiving committee notes, so the coach can help you interpret the feedback and plan the next revision before momentum is lost.

Coaches are matched by discipline and methodology experience, and profiles include each coach’s academic background and areas of specialization so you can review their fit before booking. You are welcome to ask a prospective coach directly about their degree, methodology experience, and software proficiency before your first session.

Coaching is available at the topic-development stage too. Sessions can focus on narrowing a broad interest area into a researchable problem statement, checking whether a proposed research question is actually answerable with the methodology you have access to, and preparing you for your first proposal meeting with your advisor or committee.

Yes. Coaching is available to graduate students worldwide, and sessions are scheduled to accommodate different time zones. Coaches are also familiar with the dissertation structures used outside the U.S., including the UK and Commonwealth thesis format and the European doctoral dissertation model, and will confirm your specific program’s expectations before your first session.

If a session doesn’t go well or a coach isn’t the right fit for your subject or working style, tell us and we’ll either arrange a different coach at no additional cost or discuss a refund for that session, depending on the circumstances. You are never required to continue with a coach you don’t feel is helping.
