The Power of Reflection

Simulation is a safe space to fail and learn. As emphasized in our nursing case studies, the debrief is where the actual learning occurs. This assignment asks you to critically evaluate your performance.

1. Identifying Strengths

What went well? Focus on clinical judgment and safety.

2. Areas for Improvement

Be honest. Did you miss a vital sign change? Did you forget to document? Identifying weaknesses is the first step to fixing them.

3. Connecting Theory to Practice

Nursing is not just tasks; it’s applied science. How did classroom concepts appear in the SIM?

• Pathophysiology: Did you recognize the signs of shock because you learned the mechanism in class?
• Pharmacology: Did you know the side effects of the med before administering it?

4. Remediation Plan

If errors occurred, you must show you know how to fix them. This is critical for patient safety.

Example: “I broke the sterile field while inserting the Foley catheter.”

Use a source. “According to Potter & Perry (2021), if a sterile glove touches a non-sterile surface, the procedure must stop immediately…”

“In real practice, I would discard the contaminated kit and start over to prevent CAUTI.”
