Live Music Experience Report

Live Music Experience Report

Music is a very important aspect of human life. An English philosopher, Friedrich, once indicated that were it not for music, then life would be meaningless (Nietzsche 1). In fact, it is clear that music is a very powerful tool in the lives of human beings. This essay examines one of the writer’s colorful experiences in a music festival he had once attended. This is with an aim of attesting to the fact that music is important in human lives and that at some point in life, it brings joy and happiness. In an effort to enable the reader follow the essay with ease, the writer subdivides the paper into five major sections as shown below.

Live Music Experience Report

The style of Music the artists performed

It was back in the year 2011 on the 7th of August when I was privileged to attend an inter faculty college music festivals whose genre was the reggae music in Boston music theaters. The music theater was painted red and the turn up was enormous. The experience and the passion are two things I wonder whether they will come back to my reality. The reggae music was purely nourished with Jamaican reggae and I was able to learn some new terms including ‘Iman, yea man, jah Rasta farri though the list is endless.

Three things the writer enjoyed

The performers had turned up for the occasion and were quite prepared. In fact, they had been in costumes that made the audience believe that they (performers) were really Jamaicans. Their costumes had conspicuous colors that indicated the reggae heritage. It was such a wonderful moment as a fan of reggae music.

In addition to their costumes, was the manner in which they used the musical instruments including the guitars and the drums. The guitar, in particular had a great impact on the audience as it was used to play the chords. This was such a powerful instrument that fostered the interest of the audience in general. The rhythmic assent of off beats in the performance was enhanced by use of the drums.

The third aspect of the performance I really enjoyed was the dancing style, which comprised of waving in the air and shaking of the head in a manner similar to real Jamaican reggae musicians who normally use this in an effort to show their attitudes towards real issues in life depending on the theme of the music in question. Indeed, this was really a proper reggae music performance.

The Most Prominent Expressive Element

I in particular remember Stephen Wilson, a student of Harvard University on stage performing his new reggae song The Isolated Sheep. In his presentation, he tried as much as possible to show a sense of originality. The theme of his music was racism that existed among the black people who lived in the low lands of the country. In order to bring up the essence of the reggae music, his costume was similar to those of the previous performers. Besides this, he also used the drums and the guitar so as bring about the reggae music rhythm, which was one of the criterions that the judges looked at in their assessment. This must have been one of the most exciting moments since at the end of his music; the composer used names and sentences that he never finished. This resulted to suspense on the part of the audience and was willing to continue listening to his performance. However, he had finished his reggae music in stage. Though the suspense, his performance was able to drive the message home concerning racism.

One Song That Provoked the Audience Feelings

Then came this group from Hunter College that performed a rendition of a song by the famous Lutah Fyah; Come Over. In fact, this group fascinated the audience. It was one of such groups that performed in a group of ten where one of the performers would start the music then the others join in some parts of the music. While, the soloist sung, the remaining nine were involved in instrumentation. The group had been subdivided into two where one specialized in beating up the drums while the others would use the guitar. The drummers were in a static point and could not have any movements. However, the guitarist made random movements which really aroused the interest of the audience. This group did provoke the audience feelings compared to all other groups in stage .The group’s performance was wonderful. They incorporated the music with proper instrumentation comprising of guitars, brassy sounds from the drums as well as the wailing vocals from the guitarists.

The Response of the Audience in General

During the performance, the audience was able to be part of the performance whereby, at some point during Hunter’s College performance, they could join them in the dance floor as well as produce the wailing vocals which enhanced the group’s performance.

To this end it would be right to conclude that the performance was wonderful. In line with this everyone was excited as a result of the various groups that presented in the festival.

Financial Service Management: A Development Plan and Reflective Report

Financial Service Management:  A Development Plan and Reflective Report

Part A: Development Plan

Since high school I have always wanted to work in a career that involves interacting with people rather than technical jobs where one deals with machines. After seeing many people suffer losses during the financial crisis my desire to work in financial institutions became more invigorated and since joining college I have set my mind to pursue a career in banking customer service as an advisor. Most families were ill informed and advised about market conditions and how to avoid suffering huge losses. As a bank customer service advisor, I will be better positioned to promote financial literacy among individuals to enhance their financial management and investment through quality and informed financial advisory. Normally, banking customer service advisors perform various duties including; one, handling customer complaints by responding to them on a timely basis and to the delight of customers. Two, involves advising customers on the suitability of various financial products that suits their conditions. For example, those leaving college will be best suited for a private pension plan as opposed to proposing the same to retirees. Three, a bank customer service advisor provides feedback to the management to help them in improving their services for customer satisfaction. The job also involves providing desk service roles as front-line service providers to enhance customer satisfaction (Knapp 2009).

To adequately perform this function, one needs to have certain skills like good people skills, critical thinking and good problem solving skills. Personal confidence, self management and interpersonal communication skills to present ideas, a good listener and ability to deal with difficult clients also come in handy.  Unfortunately for me I have not been a good listener and often jumped into conclusions before getting to the core of the matter. At times I can be temperamental a situation that makes it hard for me to deal with difficult people. However, I must admit that going through this course and attending several public speaking lectures I have improved on my people skills. The positions for this career are available in commercial banks, micro finance institutions, financial advisory firms, investment banks, pension and mutual funds among others.

A career as a banking customer service advisor requires somebody who is flexible, articulate and one who can handle complex and diverse range of customer issues. As a result, one should be knowledgeable enough about the finance field and therefore one has to read widely and remain afloat the current information. Good understanding of individuals’ temperament and risk profiles also helps in providing the necessary financial advisory. Time management is essential as some customer requests, enquiries and complaints require quick response.

Having noted the requirement for this job and realized my weaknesses I have embarked on  a number of activities and action plans that have yielded good results in that direction.  I must admit that using the skills set and behavior toolkit developed by Chapman (2006) was a major turning point as I was able to objectively evaluate my strengths and weaknesses in line with required skills for a career as a customer advisor. From this assessment, I developed a work plan to address my weaknesses. Generally, my weaknesses included; limited financial knowledge, a poor listener and negotiator, non-team player and difficulties in managing stress and conflicts. For example, I noted earlier in college that I was never interested in group assignments preferring to work alone. I only came to realize the benefits of teamwork when I started seriously engaging in group assignment especially for this course. I also had the know-it all attitude which prevented me from listening to others properly and often jumping into conclusions without understanding what the real problem was. I remember during the financial crisis I was watching the news and saw families recounting their ordeals on losses of their homes and pensions and thought they were just not smart only to later learn that even investment banks and fund managers lost their investments meaning the problem was more than financial literacy.  On the other hand, my strengths include; assertiveness, ability to develop mutual trust, flexibility, time management, dedication and passion in what I do. Looking back at my education background I can say am good in time management as I complete my assignments in time and fulfils the plans I set to achieve. I can recall with delight the progress I have made since designing a plan of action on how to improve my weaknesses and the indicators of success. I have managed to keep track of this plan and have seen improvements in my main areas of weakness.

In addition, I have been working on a number of ways to develop the necessary skills for a career in banking customer service advisory. My personal development strategies are contained in an action plan that I developed to run until completion of my college education that targets all areas of weaknesses as well as reinforcing the strengths. The action plan has clearly defined benchmarks and key indicators that help me to monitor and track progress made without digressing from the time frames. For example, to improve my financial literacy I have been reading financial journals and magazines regularly from the library as well as case studies of successful individuals in finance industry. Reading personal success books like Covey’s (2003) 7 habits of highly effective people has helped me to become a good self manager. To prepare myself for roles ahead I have also been reading customer service and front office service operation books. Through this strategy I have been able to understand the work environment and know what to expect and what is required of me to make a successful career in banking advisory. Cooperating in group assignment has helped to improve my people skills, negotiation, listening and team spirit. Teamwork has also helped me to have a broader approach to problems since contributions from different group members to a problem shows that a particular problem can be addressed from perspectives. This improves one’s critical thinking abilities and provides multi-faceted problem diagnosis approaches.

Part B: Reflective Report

Understanding Success

Success is what differentiates those that achieve their goals, overcome challenges and those that have no goals to achieve or lack success skills. Before this course, my approach to success was not clear because I lacked principles and practices of highly successful individuals. I used to set vague goals in my mind which I often failed to achieve and this situation needed remedy. During the course I read books on personal success approaches that have helped me to have better approaches to success. For example, Covey’s (2003) 7 habits of highly effective people totally changed by focus on success. Redman (1995) teachings on achieving personal success were also an eye opener. Case reviews of successful people in finance like Warren Buffet have helped to understand that success involves planning and visualizing end results. SMART goals concept helped developing clear road map to success (O’Neill and Conzemius, 2006). To change the situation I used my personal values of dedication and flexibility. Use of skills set and behavior assessment toolkit has helped to rank and identity essential and desirable skills for success. I have now developed an action plan addressing my weaknesses in listening, financial understanding and team spirit.

Effectiveness in People Skills

Success is seldom an individual’s effort but often involves working with others. I must admit that going through this course have to improve my people and personal skills. Before the course I had poor listening abilities, not a team player, challenges dealing with difficult people and poor negotiation skills. These weaknesses watered down my strengths of being assertive and developing mutual trust.  Contrary to my past, I have improved in contributing to teamwork that we had during the course. I have also noted that by learning to listen, I have become a better negotiator as I know what to capitalize on in addition to dealing difficult people. In the past I often failed to understand what the problem was with people. Currently, I can comfortably say that I more accommodative of team members which has helped me to learn a lot. In my lower classes I thought I knew more than my classmates but am surprised by what I have learnt from them through listening and being a team player. Chapman (2006) skills set and behavior assessment toolkit used to assess essential people skills at the start helped me to develop an action plan to improve my weak areas with tangible results. However, I still have to work managing stress and conflicts, taking personal responsibility to solve clients’ problems and dealing with difficult people. Listening more and engaging more in team work will help improve my people skills.

Creative thinking

To offer any meaningful financial services, one needs to be creative to address problems at hand better than competition to the delight of clients. Before the course I had little understanding what creative thinking entails but going through the topics and thematic case studies I now know what is involved and the dimensions. Individual assignments have helped to develop confidence in personal creativity and using creative thinking strategies by engaging my mind effectively. To generate new ideas I have learnt to look at things from all dimensions, wide spectrum, engage human creativity through intuition, listening and benefits of reading widely (Adrian 2007; Schwenker and Spremann 2009; Shavinina 2003). My weaknesses involved inability to understand the creative process and generating creative ideas. Teamwork and individual assignments have helped me to identify barriers to new ideas, ways of improving confidence and taking the time think over problems than rushing to conclude. I remember during one the individual assignments when fear from within, uncertainty and doubt prevented me from presenting creative work only to realize what was being presented was what I was uncertain. To improve my creative thinking, I have started reading widely, working on my confidence to build confidence and improve on my intuition and logic.

 Problem solving and task management

Effectiveness in problem solving calls better approaches to the same, task identification and their management. While I used to jump into solution search without analyzing the source and root cause of the problem, I know have better analytical skills to problem, ability to development action plans and tasks needed to solve problems at hand. Working individually, I have learnt that drawing lessons from failures and successes in past problems that are somehow related helps in getting solutions to problems in a better fashion. While working with my team mates, I have learnt different people view problem differently and provide solutions using different approaches. Through I now appreciate the essence of consultation and assigning tasks to people based on their strengths to solve problems. I had weaknesses on following same approaches to similar problem which at times was not working as times and people behind were different (Aken, Berends and Bij, 2007). I have improved my approaches to problems and psychology behind by drawing vital lessons from Gestalt, puzzle-problem and great-minds approaches to problems (Davidson and Sternberg, 2007). Drawing from Russell (2007), I have better task management strength given that I prefer phased approach to problems where I outline all the activities needed to solve a particular problem. Through this, I have developed timelines and always finished projects on time. However, my weakness in fully identifying the root causes to problems has often led to development of the wrong tasks. The action plan I have developed is helping me to learn complex strategies to problems and problems diagnosis.

Self-management

Self-management is the foundation of success and financial service management requires individuals to develop habits in line with their traits and personalities. Through the course I have managed to overcome barriers to personal success by addressing the shortcomings in my traits. I have improved my emotional intelligence especially when dealing with others.  During my individual assignments I have realized that one’s strength helps in solving the problems. While working with teams, have managed to overcome change management challenges I was not a team player but I have now learnt to manage the change process.  Through the course I have learnt better learning styles especially learning from challenges (Sims and Sims, 1995; Iozzi, 2000; and Mabey and Mayon-White, 1993).

PSY5102-8 > Applied Psychology and Behaviorism > SyllaID: 33198Week: 5Instructor: Michelle Ackerman , PhD , Introduction:Ethics in Changing Human BehaviorBefore 1906 when the U.S. federal government passed the Pure Food and Drug Act that created the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the United States was not overly concerned about research ethics. Tlegislation set basic standards for research using human subjects; however, it did not present clear-cut guidelines for researchers. In fact, ethical standards involving human research participants were not addressed until after the Nuremberg trials of the Nazi war criminals.Behaviorist John Watson strongly believed that psychologists must focus only on objectively studying behavior through observation to make psychology more like a natural science. He reduced all behavior to basic stimulus-response units and proposed that behaviors can be unlearned and manipulated, through psychology. Watson, along with graduate assistant, Rosalie Rayner (who later became second wife) put theory to the test in perhaps one of the most controversial psychological experiments ever conducted. In the Little Albert experiment, the researchers conditioned a small child to fear a white rat. The controversy with the experiment centers on the fact that the researchers did not decondition the child?s fear.Clever Hans and the animals in the IQ Zoo were all examples of behavioral principles used to change animal behaviors. When thprinciples were used to brfear of furry objects in Little Albert, questions of the ethical treatment of human subjects in psychological experiments began to emerge. Review the performance dashboard for a health care organization, as well as relevant local, state, and federal laws and policies. Review the performance dashboard for a health care organization, as well as relevant local, state, and federal laws and policies. Then, write a report for senior leaders in the organization that communicates your analysis and evaluation of the current state of organizational performance, including a recommended metric to target for improvement.IntroductionNote: Each assessment in this course builds on the work you completed in the previous assessment. Therefore, you must complete the assessments in this course in the order in which they are presented. In the era of health care reform, many of the laws and policies set by government at the local, state, and federal levels have specific performance benchmarks related to care delivery outcomes that organizations must achieve. It is critical for organizational success that the interprofessional care team is able to understand reports and dashboards that display the metrics related to performance and compliance benchmarks.Maintaining standards and promoting quality in modern health care are crucial, not only for the care of patients, but also for the continuing success and financial viability of health care organizations. In the era of health care reform, health care leaders must understand what quality care entails and how quality in health care connects to the standards set by relevant federal, state, and local laws and policies. An understanding of relevant benchmarks that result from these laws and policies, and how they relate to quality care and regulatory standards, is also vitally important.Health care is a dynamic, complex, and heavily regulated industry. For this reason, you will be expected to constantly scan the external environment for emerging laws, new regulations, and changing industry standards. You may discover that as new policies are enacted into law, ambiguity in interpretation of various facets of the law may occur. Sometimes, new laws conflict with preexisting laws and regulations, or unexpected implementation issues arise, which may warrant further clarification from lawmakers. Adding partisan politics and social media to the mix can further complicate understanding of the process and buy in from stakeholders. How many health care laws can you name that affect your practice in your current or future workplace? How do they impact your daily work? How many regulatory agencies oversee the types of services your health care organization provides? Which regulatory agencies apply to your workplace setting? Are you familiar with the process of complying with those agencies in order to maintain certification? You might be overwhelmed as you consider these broad questions.Demonstration of ProficiencyBy successfully completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies and assessment criteria:Competency 1: Analyze the effects of health care policies, laws, and regulations on organizations, interprofessional teams, and personal practice.Analyze challenges that meeting prescribed benchmarks can pose for a heath care organization or an interprofessional team.Competency 3: Lead the development and implementation of ethical and culturally sensitive policies that improve health outcomes for individuals, organizations, and populations.Advocate for ethical action in addressing a benchmark underperformance, directed toward an appropriate group of stakeholders.Competency 4: Evaluate relevant indicators of performance, such as benchmarks, research, and best practices, for health care policies and law for patients, organizations, and populations.Evaluate dashboard metrics with regard to benchmarks set by local, state, or federal health care policies or laws.Evaluate a benchmark underperformance in a heath care organization or an interprofessional team that has the potential for greatly improving overall quality or performance.Competency 6: Apply various methods of communicating with policy makers, stakeholders, colleagues, and patients to ensure that communication in a given situation is professional, clear, efficient, and effective.Communicate evaluation and analysis in a professional and effective manner, writing content clearly and logically, with correct use of grammar, punctuation, and spelling.Integrate relevant sources to support arguments, correctly formatting citations and references using current APA style.PreparationFor this assessment, you may choose one of the following three options for a performance dashboard to use as the basis for your benchmark evaluation.Option 1: Dashboard and Health Care Benchmark Evaluation SimulationYou may use the data presented in the Dashboard and Health Care Benchmark Evaluation media piece as the basis for your assessment submission. If you decide to use the simulation dashboard for your evaluation, review the dashboard, as well as  relevant local, state, and federal laws and policies. Consider the metrics within the dashboard that are falling short of the prescribed benchmarks.Option 2: Actual Dashboard From a Professional Practice SettingIf you choose an actual dashboard from a professional practice setting for your evaluation, be sure to add a brief description of the organization and setting that includes:The size of the facility that the dashboard is reporting on.The specific type of care delivery. The population diversity and ethnicity demographics. The socioeconomic level of the population served by the organization.Note: Ensure that your data is Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) compliant. Do not use any easily identifiable organization or patient information.Option 3: Hypothetical Dashboard Based on a Professional Practice SettingIf you have a sophisticated understanding of dashboards that are relevant to your own practice, you may also construct a hypothetical dashboard for your evaluation, based on that setting. Your hypothetical dashboard must present at least four different metrics, at least two of which must be underperforming the relevant benchmark set forth by a federal, state, or local laws or policies. In addition, be sure to add a brief description of the organization and setting that includes:The size of the facility that the dashboard is reporting on.The specific type of care delivery. The population diversity and ethnicity demographics. The socioeconomic level of the population served by the organization.Note: Ensure that your data is HIPAA compliant. Do not use any easily identifiable organization or patient information.InstructionsStructure your report in such a way that it would be easy for a colleague or supervisor to locate the information they need. Be sure to cite relevant local, state, or federal health care laws or policies when evaluating metric performance against prescribed benchmarks. Cite an additional 2–4 credible sources to support your analysis and evaluation of the challenges in meeting the benchmarks, the potential for performance improvement, and your advocacy for ethical action. You may wish to review the Dashboard Benchmark Evaluation Example [DOC] for additional support in planning and developing your submission for this assessment.Note: The tasks outlined below correspond to grading criteria in the scoring guide. In your report, be sure to:Evaluate dashboard metrics against the benchmarks set by local, state, or federal health care laws or policies.Which metrics are below the mandated benchmarks in the organization? Evaluate weaknesses within the entire set of benchmarks. What are the local, state, or federal health care laws or policies that set these benchmarks?Analyze challenges that meeting prescribed benchmarks can pose for the organization or for an interprofessional team. What are the specific challenges or opportunities that the organization or interprofessional team might have in meeting the benchmarks? For example, consider:The strategic direction of the organization. The organization’s mission.Available resources:Staffing.Operational and capital funding.Physical space.Support services (any ancillary department that supports a specific care unit in the organization, such as a pharmacy, cleaning services, and dietary services).Cultural diversity in the organization.Cultural diversity in the community.Organizational processes and procedures. How might these challenges be contributing to benchmark underperformance?Evaluate a benchmark underperformance in the organization or interprofessional team that has the potential for greatly improving overall quality or performance.Which metric is underperforming its benchmark by the greatest degree?Which benchmark underperformance is the most widespread throughout the organization or interprofessional team?Which benchmark affects the greatest number of patients?Which benchmark affects the greatest number of staff? How does this underperformance affect the community the organization serves?Where is the greatest opportunity for improvement in the overall quality or performance of the organization or interpersonal team—and ultimately in patient outcomes?Advocate for ethical action in addressing the benchmark underperformance that has the potential for greatly improving overall quality or performance. At which group of stakeholders should your advocacy be directed? Which group could be expected to take the appropriate action to improve the benchmark metric? What are some ethical actions that the stakeholder group could take that support improved benchmark performance? Why should the stakeholder group take action?Communicate your findings and recommendations in a professional and effective manner.Ensure that your report is well organized and easy to read.Write clearly and logically, using correct grammar, punctuation, and mechanics.Integrate relevant sources to support your arguments, correctly formatting source citations and references using current APA style.Did you cite relevant local, state, or federal health care laws or policies when discussing the mandated benchmarks?Did you cite an additional 2–4 credible sources to support your analysis, evaluation, and advocacy?Additional RequirementsStructure: Include a reference page.Length: 2–5 pages should be sufficient for presenting a thorough and concise evaluation, not including any pages for presenting your data and your reference page.References: Cite 2-4 current scholarly or professional resources.Format: Use APA style for references and citations. You may wish to refer to the following APA resources to help with your structure, formatting, and style:APA Style and Format.APA Paper Tutorial.APA Paper Template.Font: Times New Roman font, 12 point, double-spaced for narrative portions only.Grading Rubric:1)  Evaluate dashboard metrics with regard to benchmarks set by local, state, or federal health care policies or laws.Passing Grade:  Evaluates dashboard metrics with regard to benchmarks set by local, state, or federal health care policies or laws, and identifies knowledge gaps, unknowns, missing information, unanswered questions, or areas of uncertainty (where further information could improve the evaluation).2)  Analyze challenges that meeting prescribed benchmarks can pose for a heath care organization or an interprofessional team.Passing Grade:  Analyzes challenges that meeting prescribed benchmarks can pose for a heath care organization or an interprofessional team, and identifies assumptions on which the analysis is based.3)  Evaluate a benchmark underperformance in a heath care organization or an interprofessional team that has the potential for greatly improving overall quality or performance.Passing Grade:  Evaluates a benchmark underperformance in a heath care organization or an interprofessional team that has the potential for greatly improving overall quality or performance; defends reasoning for selecting this benchmark over another with similar potential for improvement.4)  Advocate for ethical action in addressing a benchmark underperformance, directed toward an appropriate group of stakeholders.Passing Grade:  Advocates for ethical action in addressing a benchmark underperformance, directed toward an appropriate group of stakeholders, and recommends criteria for evaluating the effectiveness of the recommended action.5)  Communicate evaluation and analysis in a professional and effective manner, writing content clearly and logically with correct use of grammar, punctuation, and spelling.Passing Grade:  The evaluation and analysis are professional, effective, and insightful; the content is clear, logical, and persuasive; grammar, punctuation, and spelling are without errors.6)  Integrate relevant sources to support arguments, correctly formatting citations and references using current APA style.Passing Grade:  Integrates relevant sources to support arguments, correctly formatting citations and references using current APA style.
