The aims of this assignment are to give you practice in preparing and writing
an effective job application. The effectiveness of your application (the
content, clarity, professionalism, enthusiasm conveyed etc) is what will get
you to an interview. It is your first opportunity to create a good impression.
Please note that it is important that the Professional Skills outlined in the
Study Guide (see Workshop 2,5 & 6, pg. 55) feature in this assignment and
indeed in all of your current and future professional communications. These
will be assessed as part of this assignment.
Please read all of the instructions carefully and complete all parts of this
assignment.
You are required to apply what you have learned from the online resources
and in Workshops 1 and 4 (the feedback session) in a written application for
one of the job advertisements provided below. Information, tips and examples
are also provided in this Study Guide to assist you.

closely suits your desired employment/career path. It may not be an exact fit,
but it will serve to provide you with a template that you can use for future

Applications are invited for a Junior Research Assistant (RA) position in the Cell
Signalling Unit. The RA position is available immediately to participate in the
development and primarily the screening of inhibitors of the enzyme dynamin. The
work is part of a national team effort in drug discovery and testing the best
compounds in disease models of epilepsy and cancer. The dynamin drug
discovery platform consists of robust biochemical and cellular assays as well as in
vivo screening. The research primarily involves protein biochemistry, enzyme
assay and cell-based endocytosis assays using fluorescence microscopy to
identify the most potent and selective inhibitors (Odell et al 2010, J.Med.Chem.
53(14): 5267-80; Joshi et al 2010, Mol.Cancer.Ther. 9(7):1995-2006; Hill et al.
2010, J.Med.Chem. 53(10):4094-102; Quan et al 2007, Mol.Pharmacol. 72: 1425-
39). The appointment will be for 1 to 1.5 years fixed term. Extension of
appointment will be dependent upon further external funding from competitive
grants.
Applicants should hold a B.Sc. or equivalent and should have some experience in
general biochemistry or cell biology. Hands-on experience of robust biochemical
and cellular assays for High Throughput Screening is a distinct advantage.
Knowledge of pharmacology, protein expression and purification, or molecular
biology techniques is desirable. Applicants from either a chemical or biological
background are encouraged. Applicants must indicate if they are Australian
citizens, permanent residents or should provide evidence of work permits.

ROLE:
To oversee the development, implementation and periodic review of the WESROC
(Western Suburbs Regional Organisation of Councils) strategic operational plans

environmental projects and initiatives.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
1. Coordination of Initiatives Time: 40%
¡P Develop, implement and review the WESROC Environmental Improvement
Action Plans for each financial year.
¡P Research and develop project plans for priority actions.
