Center for Disease Control (CDC)

If it were within your power to have the National Institute of Health (NIH) or the Center for Disease Control (CDC) focus on one disease to eliminate from the planet, which disease would this be?

In your post you should address the following aspects:

Put the name of your choice in the subject title of your post so other students can easily see which diseases have already been nominated.

Points will be deducted for duplicate entries (unless the time stamps on both posts are very close together, suggesting they were being written at the same time).

Name and describe the disease and/or microbe (including its scientific name).

Explain the progression, symptoms, current treatment and/or prevention strategies used to combat the disease.

Identify if it is viral, prion, protist, or bacteria.

This means it has to be a communicable disease that you choose! No cancers, genetic disorders or diseases caused by abiotic factors allowed!)

Explain how it is transmitted.

Be sure to include important aspects of the microbe’s biology or transmission method that is unique and incorporate appropriate vocabulary introduced in the learning materials.

How many people globally or nationally are affected by this disease?

Are there certain parts of the world or individuals/races/population subsets where this disease is more prevalent?

Relate why you think this particular disease should receive disproportionate attention/focus/funding above all others.

Do you have personal experience with this disease, do you simply find it too terrible to allow its continued persistence, or…?

To receive full credit, you must:
  • Write in complete sentences that are thoughtful, well written, and free of typos.
  • Address all parts of the forum topic.
  • Use vocabulary presented in the learning materials appropriately.
  • Create a discussion and reply to another discussion by 8:00 pm on Saturday of week 6 (7 days after week 6 module becomes available).

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive disease that destroys memory and interrupts normal mental functions. These include thinking, reasoning, and typical behavior. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia 60 to 80 percent of dementia cases are in fact Alzheimer’s. The disease starts off by causing mild memory problems, difficulty recalling information, and slips in recollection. Over time, however, the disease progresses and you may not have memory of large periods of time. Risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease include being older than 65, a family history of the disease, inheriting genes for the disease from your parents, existing mild cognitive impairment, down syndrome, unhealthy lifestyle, being female, previous head trauma, and being shut off from a community or having poor engagement with other people for extended periods of time. There’s not currently a way to prevent Alzheimer’s disease. Researches aren’t clear why some people develop it and others don’t. Alzheimer’s often starts to show up in people around mid-60s. Alzheimer’s disease is currently ranked as the sixth leading cause of death in the United States, but recent estimates indicate that the disorder may rank third, just behind heart disease and cancer, as a cause of death for older people. Alzheimer’s may be able to spread through blood transfusion but most of the time it is passed down through genes. World wide over 50 million people are living with Alzheimer’s. I believe that alzheimer’s should be focused on because so many people suffer from it and not only does the person with alzheimer’s suffer but so does the family because the person loses their memory.

reply to student #2

I think one disease the CDC should focus on eliminating from the planet is STD’s. One that I think would be very beneficial to get rid of would be HIV/AIDS.  HIV is considered a prion. It is believed that HIV started and came from a chimpanzee species that was located in Central Africa. It is believed HIV was spread when it was in these chimpanzee’s, and then once they were hunted for their meat and people were eating them, so it was mixing into their blood stream once digested. It is currently estimated that 1.1 million people in the United states are living with HIV, and 15% do not even know they have it. Worldwide, about 36.7 million people have HIV.  HIV/AIDS is spread through the contact of certain bodily fluids (such as semen, blood, etc). This means having unprotected sex with someone is the main way that this is spread. If one partner has it then the other is susceptible to get it. You cannot get it when both partners do not have it.

HIV has three different stages. The first one is called the “acute HIV infection”. This time frame starts to occur 2-4 weeks after someone becomes infected. During this time, people experience what they think is the flu, but it is really just flu like symptoms. This can last up to a few weeks. The reason people initially have this reaction is because your body realizes it is a disease and is something they need to fight off. Most people who are in this stage are completely unaware of what is going on. The second stage is called Clinical Latency, which is when the HIV is either inactive or dormant. People typically do not have symptoms in this stage, but the HIV is still there and active. This stage can progress fast if left untreated, but if someone is aware and is on medication HIV can stay in this stage for over a decade. Even though HIV is dormant during this stage, it can still be transmitted since it is in the blood stream. The third stage is when HIV turns into AIDS, which is Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome. This is considered the stage where it becomes the most severe. It can damage immune systems which makes people more susceptible to illnesses since their immune system is down and unable to fight them off. People in this stage are considered very infectious to others.

As of right now, there is no cure for HIV/AIDS. There are medications to help manage and control, but nothing to completely eliminate.  I believe this one should be eliminated above others because it is a disease that is located worldwide. Since it also makes the immune system more susceptible, it allows people to catch other diseases or develop cancer that potentially could have been avoided if they had not had HIV/AIDS in the first place. HIV is not as common in the US, but in 3rd world countries and other countries with a lower poverty level it is more common. I think HIV being eliminated would positively benefit the world as a whole and help these countries.

Business Planning

Program planning, strategic planning, business planning. This Discussion asks you to consider the relationships and intersections between these essential forms of planning.

All programs should have a strategic plan, as well as a sound business plan to guide their endeavors. Although completing a robust business plan (or a strategic plan) is beyond the scope of this course, it is beneficial to understand how and why such a plan could be useful for your program. Give some thought to this as you engage in this Discussion with your colleagues.

To prepare:

Review the information in the Learning Resources, focusing on Chapter 4 of Assessment and Planning in Health Programs (for the logic model), as well as additional resources on business planning such as the U.S. Small Business Administration website.

Conduct additional research on your own regarding the relationship between strategic planning and business planning and consider how these relate to program planning.

By tomorrow Tuesday 01/08/2019 6 pm post a minimum of 550 words essay in APA format with a minimum of three or more scholarly references from the list or required readings below; INCLUDE the level one headers as numbered below:

Post a cohesive scholarly response that addresses the following:

1) What is the prospective impact of a business plan on the strategic planning of a program? Support your response with references to the logic model and program theory models.

2) How does business planning relate to program planning? Support your response with an example from the literature.

The Community Health Center in Sentinel City

The Community Health Center in Sentinel City.

The Community Health Center allocated in Sentinel City provides various healthcare services such as pregnancy, contraceptives, testing and counseling preventive health service and STD services to the population. The community health center also provides breast and cervical cancer screening for all patients and other residents. The study established that Sentinel City has a population of three hundred thousand. However, the Interfaith Church is located next to Soup Kitchen and, I could notice people singing from the church and other lining in front of Soup Kitchen. The Soup Kitchen is located in Sentinel City is meant to serve the homeless and other residents with food. It is approximated that the Kitchen serves 40,000 people daily which is a good plan for health care development. Through interview and research, it was noticed that the population of people served with food at Soup Kitchen normally increases during summer due to the fact that several homeless and other people usually move to the city during summer time.
There are four districts in Sentinel City and they are allocated in different edge of the city. These districts are Acer Tech Center, Industrial Heights, Casper Park and Nightingale Square, and these cities have different total population of people living in each district. The Sentinel City Department of Transport offers the most affordable and technical transport system. The business which takes visitors and even residents around are safe and efficient. The Department of Transport is located next to City Hall and adjacent to the ABC health center. The community main transport systems are buses which they use to get out of the city and drive in as well. Though there are some people who have personal cars and bicycles. The highways are wide and well maintained and therefore, it provides efficient and affordable transport system to the community.
Most residents are Whites Caucuses with an average income of USD 165,482 per years. Though there are few African Americas and Asians as well. Again the majority of residents are Christians and it also seems that the residents are not political active since; there are no posters for campaigns. The residents seem to hang out in the malls and recreational center available next to Sentinel City Healthcare Centre.
Assessment of Needs and Risks
Demographic

The study shows that the age bracket of residents of Sentinel City range between 15 years to 55 years. Majority of people who live in the City are well off or wealthy. The affordable Housing provides affordable housing to people living within the community. It also provides one bedroom, studio and two-bedroom units for the community. The studied established that the most occupied unit is the studio at an average of 44% followed closely by two bedroom units at 43%; these ensure that there are limited housing problems at Sentinel City. The data collected from four districts of Sentinel city indicates that the most complaints from the residents are factory smoking at 21%, dog barking at 18%. The analysis of data from the four districts of Sentinel City also indicate that the nice areas of the city is where people with higher incomes live and therefore, people with a good income live in stylish neighborhood.
Neighborhood/Community Safety Inventory

The Sentinel City has a good security and general safe. The study indicates that the community has registered few cases of insecurity issues and other cases of insecurity issues have been handled with care. Beside, the community has well established emergency system to provide various emergency services to the resident. There are fire department and other rescue team on standby almost 24hrs a day. I conversation with Mayor Offices at County Office, established that the emergency department is constituted to keep the city safe.
The data collected also indicates that there are few cases of environmental issues such as air population within the Sentinel City. The buses and cars though use natural gases which do not pollute the atmosphere; there are litters or cabbages in the streets around the city. I drive through the city allows me to notice present of litters from different corners. This is a matter of environmental concern which should be addressed since it can affect the community health system. I also noticed that there are no recreational facilities within the Sentinel City which can be a grave health concern.
Windshield survey

Through observation I could notice that most buildings within the city were constructed using bricks, though there are some buildings which were constructed by concretes. The buildings have different shapes, structures and design is also unique. For instance, the building of Sentinel Health Care System located next to the main road to the City Hall is tall constructed using concretes stones and painted white as well. This is different with other buildings like the ABC Day care which is constructed using bricks and look like an old building structure. However, the village structures are constructed using bricks and most of them resemble and they are built in an old fashioned style.
There are also a number of homeless people on the street of Sentinel City and most of them seem to have lived there for quite long. I noticed that most homeless people depend on food from Soup Kitchen and also get accommodation from affordable housing program which launched by the City government. However, the presence of homeless along major streets is a clear indication that majority of residents are poor and survive on food stamp.
Population Health Scavenger

Majority of resident of Sentinel City do not health insurance since they cannot afford. The data collected indicates that almost 60% of residents live below expected income. There are also several homeless people who dwell in the city and therefore, they do not have health care insurance. The poor neighborhood is also a matter of concern since there is high rate of air pollution and cabbages littering with affect the residents. A closer analysis of data also indicate that there several infections caused by Joe’s Grocery. It is therefore, vivid that health officers or authority trusted with such responsibility are not working as expected. This is another service or aspect which is missing for the community nursing.
The study also found that some restaurant like Lily’s restaurant offers unhealthy food to the population. The food is cheap and has high content of calories. It is also established that the food served at homes also contains high content of calories and therefore, the majority of residents of Sentinel City consume high percentage of calories which can affect their and this is a matter which should be looked at as well. The percentages of people who do not have health insurance under the age of 60 are 36.5% and the number of people without continues to increase. As I travel through the city, I notice the health of the residents can change and it depends on district and location. The industrial heights area the majority of residents do not make enough money and therefore, they do not have insurance cover. This increases the risk of getting diseases and failing to seek medication attention as well. It can increase the death rate in the region if not addressed properly. Some houses are not properly kept and because of lack of finances the neighborhood experience a lot of environmental issues which can cause disease. It is the reason the area is experiencing several infections.
Analysis of Collected Data

The study conducted from various healthcare facilities in all four districts indicates an alarming trend of STI infections which needs to be addressed. It established that 10% of population suffers from obesity, this can be as a result of the rate at which people consume too much calories. There are also a good number of residents suffering from diabetes and this affect people aged between 50-60 years. The analysis of the data also shows that STI and mental problems are also a health concern to the community since, the report from the healthcare facilities indicate a steady increase of STD infection. It is because the analysis of data from Beta healthcare indicates a high percentage of STDs and pregnancy than the average report from nationwide (Leads, 2014).
Top Three Problems in Sentinel City

The top three programs in Sentinel City I discovered is inactivity because of limited number of recreational facilities, environmental health and lack of proper supervising of health issues or lack of community nursing by the authority. Though there are other problems in the community like aggravate assault and housing problems, the main problems are the three with affect the health of majority of the residents. Through observation I notice litters and cabbages in the two districts where majority of unemployed and jobless people live. This is the same place with the high number of homeless all over the street.
However, there are healthcare facilities located almost a closer distance from the residents to deal with the problems. The hospitals are equipped to address diseases like cancer, and pregnancy test. Statistic shows that health centers within Sentinel City conduct several pregnancy tests annually and therefore, the community is equipped with equipment or facilities which can address the problem (Eileen, 2017). It is noted that there are few recreational facilities like parks and physical fitness centers within community. This attributes to the high number of people suffering from obesity and other chronic diseases. The city is therefore, requires construction of several recreational facilities.
Primary Prevention

Based on the study the problems which affect the residents of Sentinel City can be addressed through medical attention. Some health care issues like environmental health problem can be solved by provision of better, efficient community nursing. The study discovered that residents consume unhealthy food and to address this problem, community nursing must be effective and efficient. The authority in charge of supervising hotels and restaurants must do their jobs conclusively, in order to solve the issue of unhealthy food and litters which are everywhere in some neighborhoods (Eileen, 2017).
In order to address the STI and pregnancy issues in Sentinel City, the healthcare workers should initiative education, training of counselors which can work together to educate the residents on sexual transmitted diseases. It is also important to avail free condoms for the residents and these condoms can be placed in most strategic locations throughout the city where residents can have access to them. The provision of condoms and training of the community of STDs and pregnancy will reduce the number of pregnancy cases and also the rate of STI in the community and therefore, the community nursing is still importance and required by the community (Catherine, 2016).
Learning form simulation of Sentinel City

This learning is essential because it provides the community set up knowledge and community health care system common across the world. It is important since the health care issues identify and addressed replicate what happens in the real community set up and therefore, It provides knowledge on how to identify community health care problems and also the way these problems can be resolved (Leads, 2014). The knowledge obtained from this simulation can therefore, transfer to a real healthcare environment to provide required or necessary healthcare services to a community. It is the practical work about community healthcare which can be used to gain knowledge and skills in the field of healthcare and especially about community health care system.

We study language in the context of how we think, read, and comprehend and derive meaning from words. But what about language from our social environment? A recent area of linguistic research is the study of language in a social context. From this perspective, language is examined in terms of how people communicate whether in person or on the Internet. People change their pronunciations, grammar, vocabulary, and styles of language for many different purposes. Given that, sociolinguists are curious about how a language is acquired and learned in the context of one’s gender, community and society. Some of these differences are related to biology. Others are related to the social environment and some differences are related to both, for example, do men and women speak different languages in our culture? Can misspelled words on a person’s Facebook wall hurt their employability?

For this assignment, research either the language differences between men and women from a social context, or between one culture and another. Are there differences in their conversational, nonverbal, and cross-cultural styles of communicating? Analyze how knowledge gained from research about language differences can be used to solve problems in social and work settings.

For this assignment, think about situations where you had to adjust your use of language to suit a particular context. How did you change the language? What did you say or do? Feel free to use an example from one of the activities in the course.

In your written assignment:Describe examples of events or situations where you changed your language in response to a situation or people with whom you were speaking. Since these are personal examples, you may write in first person for this part. Use third person throughout the remainder of the work.Find at least three peer-reviewed research articles that help you understand language in a social context.Describe the theoretical foundation for each study, including the psychological concepts that the researchers are using.Summarize the research articles, including the research questions being asked in each study, the methods and measures, and the conclusions reached in each article.Address how the research findings on language apply in solving communication problems.Use the implications of the research to explain how people use language and how the knowledge can apply to personal and professional life. (Think about how this information can guide communication in social contexts).Describe one or more specific ways that the information can be applied in the workplace to guide and improve communications.

To meet the criteria for the assignment, your paper should comprise 6–8 pages of content plus title and references pages. You should include a minimum of three scholarly sources. Strive to be as concise as possible and support your statements and analyses with references and citations from the three academic resources as well as any necessary scholarly resources.

Cognitive psychology research is often featured in the mainstream media. For example, a few years ago Oprah Winfrey featured Dr. Strayer’s research on distractibility when talking on the cell phone while driving. She then used his research to start a movement that discouraged drivers from using their cell phones when behind the wheel.

Popular media features, such as those on Oprah, Dr. Oz, and in People magazine, exemplify how cognitive psychological research can inform the public about how our cognitive processes work.

Using the three examples of cognitive psychology research featured in the media that you have researched (newspapers, television, and magazines), write a two-page paper for each resource and explain how it fits with what we know about cognition. Each example must cover a different topic. Reference the original articles or videos. Include the following in each paper:Analyze the concepts of cognitive psychology (attention, limits, inattention, automatic processing, and so on) that you observe in each of the selected articles or videos.Describe how the concepts are applied in real-world situations.Describe other examples of how the concepts you analyzed are present in everyday life, and how understanding them can be used to improve life (such as Oprah’s efforts to educate people about the dangers of distractibility while driving).

Note: You must support your claims with evidence from the text by including internal citations.
