Essay – Promoting mental health and wellbeing (1000 words)

Aim of assessment
The purpose of this guided essay is to enable students to consolidate nursing/midwifery issues covered in class materials and to determine students’ understanding of the topics and applications, in preparation for transition into the professional nursing and midwifery workforce. This is a guided essay based on a case study where the students respond by answering a series of questions.

Details
Using EITHER Scenario A or Scenario B- please answer the following questions:

1. Investigate and outline the prevalence/incidence of depression / anxiety (depending on the scenario you have chosen) in Australia – Your answer needs to cover: gender, age groups, specific risk groups, hospitalisations.
2. Using current literature discuss TWO (2) factors that may have contributed to the development of the client’s presentation and mental health concerns.
3. Using current literature discuss TWO (2) ethico-legal issues related to your scenario.
4. Identify TWO (2) nursing/midwifery concerns / problems with evidence from your chosen scenario- Your risk identification should be focused on the next 1-5 days of nursing/midwifery care for your client.
5. For each nursing / midwifery concern / problem you have identified in Question 4, outline and describe TWO (2) evidence based nursing / midwifery interventions (ie; what you would actually do as a nurse / midwife to support the person and how you would do it). Your interventions should be focused on nursing / midwifery care for your client over the next 1-5 days. They must be interventions which you would actually undertake directly with your client within your role as a nurse or midwife. You are also required to provide a clear rationale for each nursing / midwifery intervention (ie. why have you chosen the particular nursing interventions? How will the interventions support the person or contribute positively to their current presentation or concern?) Each intervention and rationale must be supported by current literature.

Scenario A
David has been referred to you in the Emergency Mental Health Community Team by his GP. His GP is concerned about David’s mental health state and risks to self. David is a 23 year old man, currently living with his mother. Both David and his brother, Peter, have a positive relationship with their mum. David’s mother and father divorced when he was 15 years old. Before his parent’s divorce, David had a positive relationship with his dad. However at the time of his parent’s divorce David became very angry towards his dad. David also directed his anger towards his friends at the time and he quickly became isolated from his peers, ultimately leaving school at 15 years old, at the end of year 9. David and his older brother, Peter, aged 25, had shared interests of bike riding and computers during their teenager years. During your meeting with David, he stated that he did feel that he and his brother had a close relationship and friendship. However, he acknowledged that they had become more distance in recent years. David has had three past heterosexual relationships lasting several months. His last relationship finished two months ago. His most recent girlfriend has disclosed she is three months pregnant and does not wish for David to be involved in the care of the baby.
After leaving school, David had a number of part time labourer jobs. Each job lasted for two to three months. His most recent employment, over a year ago, was terminated by the employer as a result of conflict with his colleagues. David had left three of his previous jobs on his own accord as he felt “he just didn’t fit in”. He recalled a constant feeling of agitation and sadness at the time. During your contact with David, he has not worked for at least a year. He has contact with his father and brother every month or so. Many of the contacts with his father and brother end in verbal hostility. During the assessment with David, you notice he becomes distressed and tearful on your questioning. He reports recent weight loss. He discloses he has been having difficulties sleeping, feeling exhausted and increasingly depressed. You make further attempts to find out what has been happening for David and to engage with him. He asks you to stop questioning as he is ashamed of how he is currently feeling. He is worried about letting his mum down as they have always had a positive relationship. He declines to look at you while you ask him about thoughts of suicide. He does not wish for you to have any discussions with his family.

Scenario B
Tracey is a 35 year old woman who presents for assessment to the Emergency Mental Health Community Team. She is six months pregnant with her third child. Her other children, to her ex-partner, are aged three and five. Tracey is in a heterosexual relationship with her partner of one year, Peter. Peter moved in to live with Tracey and her children eight months ago. The children’s father is distressed about Peter moving in to live with his children. There is verbal hostility between Tracey and her ex- partner each time he visits to collect the children for a weekend visit. Her ex- partner frequently states he is making arrangements for court to have full time care of the children. Tracey and her current partner, Peter, are in $35,000 uncontrolled debt after a recent new joint business venture failed. A finance company calls weekly requesting payment. Tracey and her partner stopped making the mortgage repayments three months ago, with the belief that dealing with the uncontrolled debt would be a better option. Her parents are supportive but live in Queensland. Tracey is able to have face to face contact with them once a year. She does chat with her parents over telephone every week if possible. Tracey states she is worried about how she will cope with her two children and new baby. She reports low mood, weekly panic attacks and fleeting thoughts of suicide. During your meeting with Tracey, you note she is fidgety and restless, breathing rapidly, shaking slightly, sweating and tearful. She is not wishing to actively engage with the mental health services, for fear it will impact on her having care of her children, stating she will visit her General Practitioner (GP).

BMGT 495 – Project 2:  Tool Analysis

BMGT 495 – Project 2:  Tool Analysis

NOTE:  All submitted work is to be your original work (only your work). You may not use any work from another student, the Internet, or an online clearinghouse. You are expected to understand the Academic Dishonesty and Plagiarism Policy and know that it is your responsibility to learn about Instructor and general academic expectations concerning proper citation sources specified in the APA Publication Manual, 7th Ed. (You are held accountable for in-text citations and an associated reference list only.)

BMGT 495 – Project 2:  Tool Analysis

Purpose

This project is the second of four projects. It also represents the second part of the external environmental analysis part of a strategic management plan. You will use the tools and apply concepts learned in this and previous business courses to demonstrate an understanding of how organizations develop and manage strategies to establish, safeguard and sustain their competitive position in the 21st century (rapidly evolving/shifting/changing), uncertain hyper-competitive business environment.

Monitoring competitors’ performance is a key aspect of performing an external environment analysis.  This project provides you with the opportunity to evaluate the competitive position of your assigned company and integrate that information in a partial SWOT (OT), Porter’s Five Forces, External Factor Evaluation (EFE) matrix, and Competitive Profile Matrices (CPM).

In this project, you are presenting a report document. The expectation is that the report provides details to help the audience grasp the main topics and to understand and complete the External Environmental Analysis.

“Analysis” is the operative word. In analyzing the external environment, you are expected to thoroughly research the company. As part of this effort, you will need to take that research and break it into small parts to understand better what is happening in the external environment of the business. In researching an industry, it is important to understand that every company within an industry is different, so gathering information on one company does not mean that the collected information is relevant to other companies. When researching, parsing the material is critical to an accurate analysis. Avoid presenting just any information as that may lead to using irrelevant information.

You will then write the report in your own words to share the external analysis. You are expected to present information and support the ideas and reasoning using the course material and your research.  You will not lift any information from source documents without properly citing and referencing.  For the technical analysis aspect of the project, you must create the technique on your own and may not use any source material that you happen to find. No work from a clearinghouse or similar website may be used or cited as a credible source.

Outcomes Met With This Project

  • Utilize a set of useful analytical skills, tools, and techniques for analyzing a company strategically;
  • Integrate ideas, concepts, and theories from previously taken functional courses including accounting, finance, market, business, and human resource management;
  • Analyze and synthesize strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) to generate, prioritize, and implement alternative strategies to revise a current plan or write a new plan and present a strategic plan.

Instructions

Step 1  Specific Company for All Four Projects

The company that your Instructor has assigned to you for Project 1 is the company you will use for this project.  The assigned company must be used for this project and in subsequent projects in the course.  Students must complete the project using the assigned company. Deviating from the assigned company will result in a zero for the project.

After reading the course material, you will complete the steps below.

Step 2   Course Materials and Research

  • You must research information about the focal company and the environment for this project. You are accountable for using the course materials to support the ideas, reasoning, and conclusions made. Using course material extends beyond defining terms—the ‘why and how’ of a situation.  Using one or two in-text citations from the course materials and then relying on Internet source material will not earn many points on the assignment.  A variety of source material is expected, and what is presented must be relevant and applicable to the topic being discussed. Avoid merely making statements but close the loop of the discussion by explaining how something happens or why something happens, which focuses on importance and impact. In closing the loop, you will demonstrate the ability to think clearly and rationally, showing an understanding of the logical connections between the ideas presented from the research, the course material, and the question(s) being asked.

Note: Your report is based on the research results performed and not on any prepared documentation.  What this means is that you will research and draw your own conclusions that are supported by the research and the course material rather than the use of any source material that puts together any of the tools or techniques whether from the Internet, for-pay websites, or any pre-prepared document, video or source material. A zero will be earned for not doing your own analysis.

Success: The analysis is based on research and not opinion. You are not making recommendations, and you will not attempt to position the focal company in a better or worse light than other companies within the industry merely because you are completing an analysis on this particular company. The analysis must be based on factual information. Any conclusions drawn have to be based on factual information rather than leaps of faith. To ensure success, as stated above, you are expected to use the course materials and research on the focal company’s global industry and the focal company. An opinion does not earn credit, nor does the use of external sources when course materials can be used. It is necessary to provide explanations (the why and how) rather than making statements. Avoid stringing one citation after another, as doing so does not show detailed explanations.

Library Resources

  • On the main navigation bar in the classroom, select Resources and then select Library. Select Databases by Title (A – Z). Select M from the alphabet list, and then select Mergent Online. Dun and Bradstreet’s Hoovers Database, among others, is another excellent source for competitors and industry information. You are not to depend on one resource to complete the analysis.  Moreover, it is impossible to complete Porter’s Five Forces, a competitive analysis, or an OT using only the course material.
  • You should not be using obscure articles, GlassDoor, or Chron, or similar types of articles.
  • Research for Financial Analysis: Financial Research
  • Research for Industry Analysis CSI Market
  • UMGC library is available for providing resources and services. Seek library support for excellence in your academic pursuit.

Library Support

  • Extensive library resources and services are available online, 24 hours a day, seven days a week at https://www.umgc.edu/library/index.cfm to support you in your studies. The UMGC Library provides research assistance in creating search strategies, selecting relevant databases, and evaluating and citing resources in various formats via its “Ask a Librarian” service https://www.umgc.edu/library/libask/index.cfm.
  • Scholarly Research in OneSearch is allowed.
  • To search for only scholarly resources, you are expected to place a checkmark in the space for “Scholarly journals only” before clicking search.

Step 3   How to Set Up the Report

The document has to be written in Word or RTF. No other format is acceptable.  No pdf files will be graded.  Use 12-point font for a double-spaced report.  The final product should be 9 – 10 pages. The final project may not exceed 10 pages, including all tables and matrices, but excluding the title and reference pages. Do no use an Appendix.

  • Create a title page with the title, your name, date, the course number, the instructor’s name.
  • Create Topic Headings that correspond to exact sections of the project requirements.

Step 4   Industry Analysis

  • Perform a Porter Five Forces analysis on the organization’s industry and the focal company in particular.

The industry is the global industry. First, use the course materials to identify the five forces and what components make up each force. Then, perform an analysis of each force that clearly discusses the ‘why and how’ and concludes with the effect of the given force on the fortunes of the industry (industry profitability) and/or industry dynamics; that is, whether the effect of the force on the industry is weak/modest/average/moderate or strong/severe and also on the focal company. You may not use a Porter Five Forces analysis that is already completed and available on the Internet. A zero will result if used as the analysis results from your research and your own development.

Step 5  Competitive Analysis

  • Perform a Competitive Analysis using the focal company’s closest three competitors plus the selected company. Explain why these companies are competitors. Analyze the competition’s products and services, explaining features, value, targets, etc. What are the competition’s strengths and weaknesses, and what is the market outlook for the competition?
  • Identify and discuss at least eight (8) key success factors (critical success factors). Each industry has different key success factors, so make sure the success factors fit the industry. Review the Competitive Profile Matrix Example under Week 3 Content for clarification.
  • Develop a Competitor Profile Matrix (CPM). Explain how you developed the matrix. Make sure to support your reasoning.

Step 6  Partial SWOT Analysis

A SWOT analysis is a tool used to assess the strengths and weaknesses (internal environment) and the opportunities and threats (external environment) of an organization. You will complete a partial SWOT analysis only completing an analysis on the OT (Opportunities and Threats). The information presented is not based on your beliefs but fact-based, data-driven information. The items used in the OT are factors that are affecting or might affect the focal company or those companies within the identified industry.

You will:

  • Develop an OT table using your research to identify at least five (5) opportunities and five (5) threats that influence the industry and the focal company. Make sure to cite the elements within the table.
  • Perform an OT analysis (separate from the SWOT table).
  • You may not use a SWOT analysis that is already completed and available on the Internet. The OT is for the focal company and no other company. A zero will result if used as the analysis results from your research and your own development.

NOTE:  A matrix is a table. It is not an analysis.

Step 7   External Factor Evaluation (EFE) Analysis

The External Factor Evaluation (EFE) matrix will allow you to use the industry analysis and the competitive analysis to assess whether the focal company can effectively take advantage of existing opportunities while minimizing the identified external threats that will help you formulate new strategies and policies. You will use the opportunities and threats from the OT analysis.

  • Using the information gathered for the OT analysis, develop an EFE matrix using five (5) opportunities and five (5) threats. Discuss how you developed the EFE matrix and the outcome.  Make sure to support your reasoning.

Step 8  Conclusion

Create a conclusion. The Conclusion is intended to emphasize the purpose/significance of the analysis, emphasize the significance/consequence of findings, and indicate the wider applications derived from the main points of the project’s requirements. You will conclude with the findings of the external environment analysis.

Scenario A David has been referred to you in the Emergency Mental Health Community Team by his GP. His GP is concerned about Davids mental health state and risks to self. David is a 23 year old man, currently living with his mother. Both David and his brother, Peter, have a positive relationship with their mum. Davids mother and father divorced when he was 15 years old. Before his parents divorce, David had a positive relationship with his dad. However at the time of his parents divorce David became very angry towards his dad.
David had left three of his previous jobs on his own accord as he felt he just didnt fit in”.

Scenario B Tracey is a 35 year old woman who presents for assessment to the Emergency Mental Health Community Team. She is six months pregnant with her third child. Her other children, to her ex-partner, are aged three and five. Tracey is in a heterosexual relationship with her partner of one year, Peter. Peter moved in to live with Tracey and her children eight months ago. The childrens father is distressed about Peter moving in to live with his children.

According to Alfred Adler, the relationship between personality and inferiority stemmed from a desire to overcome the feelings of inferiority in childhood.  Adler theorized that every person feels inferior to another person throughout their life (Lecci & Magnavita, 2013).  He believed that children feel inferior to the capable adults in their lives and that feeling of inferiority drives them to be recognized and seen as successful, powerful, etc. as they grow into adulthood.  Adler also believed that once people perceive themselves as adults, they begin to compare themselves to their peers as a check of their potential inferiority.

As for the relationship between personality and love, Fromm discusses love as an expression of personality.  Love is how people connect with their world and those in it (Fromm, 1957).  Different people with different types of personalities desire and exhibit different forms of love.  For those who are less secure with their connection to the world and those around them, they may seek greater amounts of love and praise to compensate for their lack of esteem.  Whereas someone more connected and confident is felt to give and receive love in a healthier fashion.

One thing that really ties these theories of love and inferiority is the personal connection to other individuals—how one person perceives their connection to the people around them.  It is natural for people to compare themselves to those around them.  Inferiority and love influence the relationships we build, healthy or unhealthy, to those around us and in turn, affect how we engage in our surroundings.  Those who feel inferior well into adulthood and never come to terms with their status may find themselves beaten down by circumstances they could not overcome, and in turn believe they are undeserving and/or incapable of love—platonic, romantic, or otherwise.  Or in the reverse, someone who struggles in building or maintaining loving relationships may believe they are undeserving or less because they are not meeting the status quo they see in their peers.

Week 4 – Discussion 2 – Personification
Dr. Shoemaker
August 30, 2018
The differences between the two classes of personifications are (as cited by Sullivan), states personifications are mental images that allow us to better understand ourselves and the world we live in.”(Lecci & Magnvita, 2013, sec. 3.3) Sullivan personifications are identified as the bad-me, the good me and the not me. The bad me are the negative and hidden aspect of an individual. The good me are the positive aspect that is seen openly, and the, not me are the things we distant ourselves from, that will bring a negative connection.
The similarities between Sullivan’s personifying process and Freud’s concept of transference are the interpersonal relations forms, and the construct of transference appears to be involved in all our relationships. “Sullivan believed that we adopted new ego identities to meet the demands of different social situations” (Lecci & Magnavita, 2013, sec. 3.3). It is so true, whenever I’m with my church family I speak with them differently than when I’m around my friends. According to Lecci & Magnavita, (2013), ” the behavioral perspective uses the term generalization to indicate when learning in one context is generalized to another similar context”(sec. 3.3) In other words, transferring the emotional connection from one object to another. Additionally, it is believed that the role of interpersonal factors of ego development is to interpret and adapt to social demands, expectations, and roles. (Lecci & Magnavita, 2013, sec. 3.3)
Personification changes our image of people because we illustrate an object in a person’s mind and when the association is made to the ,t might not represent what you had in mind. Therefore the expected represention is not what the person would be present. The primacy of the social self in ego development is defined regarding the presence of others. Therefore, an individual establishes a new identity for that set of relationship as it arises. There isn’t a single or fixed personality. (Lecci & Magnavita, 2013, sec. 3.3)

In order for a career counselor to be successful, they need to be aware of cultural differences, respectful of other’s cultures and aware of how they can impact their client. If a career counselor is not properly educated on one’s culture, they may inadvertently disrespect their client and cause lasting damage on the working relationship, which could end in the termination of the counselor (Niles & Harris-Bowlsbey, 2017). No one wants to feel disrespected, especially from someone they are being vulnerable about their personal life and struggles with. This can also play a role in one’s mental health rehabilitation. According to a study in Canada, it is crucial that all staff properly understand the patient’s values, culture and beliefs in order to best assist them (Grandpierre, Milloy, Sikora, Fitzpatrick, Thomas, Potter, 2018). When creating healthy and realistic goals for patients or clients, it is important to keep in mind the reasons why the individual wants change in their life (Grandpierre, Milloy, Sikora, Fitzpatrick, Thomas, Potter, 2018). One’s culture is most likely the root of their choices and goals. This study also explained that the counselor needs to be hyper aware of their own culture and how it may impact the sessions (Grandpierre, Milloy, Sikora, Fitzpatrick, Thomas, Potter, 2018). When a counselor properly understands their client’s culture and beliefs, they are able to ensure that no misunderstandings create a challenge in their counseling relationship. This allows the counselor to focus on other obstacles the client may face externally and create interventions to help overcome them.

Classmate #-2 —— C. Banks

Hello Dr. Walker and classmates, I hope everyone had a great week and enjoyed the holiday. I am enjoying this topic so far, and learning a lot through your insightful discussion.

The U.S. population consist of multiracial, multicultural, and multilingual individuals.  This makes it imperative that counselors have the training and skills, and awareness to work with a diverse group.  This has also presented a problem with ethnic minorities terminating  after one or two counseling sessions.  It seems that members of  racial and ethnic minorities are just not relating to the material currently being used.  This problem has called for a reevaluation of the guidelines and principles currently being used in career development counseling.  It has been identified that one source to this problem is poorly trained counselors, and  culturally biased practices and techniques (Flores & Heppner, 2002).

The Following provides guidelines for culturally competent psychological practice and related behavioral objectives.

1. Awareness-  Psychologists recognize that it is necessary to make a lifelong commitment to developing cultural expertise and culture-centered practice. Counselors ensure they are aware of the relationship between mental health and oppression and discrimination. Also counselors are aware of self as a cultural being, and understands the client in his or her context.

2. Knowledge-  Psychologists strive to make a lifelong commitment to increased learning concerning the multicultural bases of psychological practice. Counselors must learn about cultural identity development theories, and non- western practices.  Counselors must also know of cultural groups history and how it may be associated to different worldviews.

3. Skills-  Psychologists strive to utilize culturally proficient awareness and knowledge in effective multicultural practice.  Counselors work as agents of social change, receiving on-going feedback pertaining to cultural competencies.  And multicultural competent counselors critique traditional interventions and theories with regard to cultural applicability.

Overall as multicultural competent counselors, we must strive to keep abreast of trends in the work force, as well as the latest research in vocational psychology.  We should pay particular attention to studies of culturally diverse populations and consistently maintain that component of our counseling competency.

Thank you,
Todd
