Thank You for Smoking Essay

Thank You for Smoking Essay.

„Thank You for Smoking“ is a political satire film by Jason Reitman. The film is adapted from a novel by Christopher Buckley. „Thank you For Smoking“ tells a story about Nick Naylor (Aaron Eckhart), who is a tobacco lobbyist. His job is to questioning opposing health claims and advocating personal choice and smoking. As he says in the film, he has a bachelor’s degree in kicking ass and taking names. At the same time he tries to be a good father for his twelve year old son, Joey.

As the tobacco sales are falling and anti-tobacco campaigns getting more influential, Naylor suggests that putting cigarettes back to movies could once again boost tobacco sales. His boss, called BR (J. K. Simmons), sends him to Los Angeles to meet the Hollywood superagent Jeff McGall. They work out a plan to put cigarettes in upcoming movies.

Everything goes perfectly until Nick has an affair with ambitious journalist, Heather Holloway (Katie Holmes). Nick belives he can trust her and tells everything about his life and work.

But Heather publishes an article about his life and secrets. After that, Nick gets kicked from his job. Eventually, he talks himself out of that mess and gets another job. Actors carry out their role perfectly especially Aaron Eckhart and J.K. Simmons. This film portrays perfectly the pain spots of America’s society. However, in my opinion, I did not like the way how film portrays anti-tobbaco people, because they seemed to be rather ridiculous, which they are not. To sum up, „Thank You for Smoking“ is an excellent comedy, making laughable America’s free market economy and the freedom of choice.

Should Cigarettes Be Banned Essay

Should Cigarettes Be Banned Essay.

Cigarettes have caused around 5 million deaths, which is 8 people dying each minute. Therefore cigarettes should be banned as they don’t just do physical damage but also moral damage. However banning cigarettes might lead to more criminal offense. Cigarettes have become a serial killer and have brought to people several different illnesses. The ingredients in a cigarette are so bad for you that they can kill a large rat in a matter of minutes.

Did you know we inhale over 4,000 different types of chemicals when we smoke and 51 of them cause cancer? .

90% of lung cancer deaths are caused by smoking and the increased health risks can be as much as 23 times higher than a normal person. There are many ads to try and persuade you not to smoke and inform people about the dangers of smoking. For example: “It’s not their choice to smoke it’s their choice to live, and have freedom to go out. ” and “Cigarettes takes your life and then kills you”.

But the addiction still can’t be wiped away. This is why cigarettes have become so destructive and harmful to not only us but also to our society.

However, bans for other products have not been effective but led to more criminal offense. If smoking was banned the consumers who were unable to quit smoking would be forced into buying black market cigarettes therefore being sent to prison. People would go crazy as they can’t consume the things they are addicted to and their body would allow them to cause many more criminal activity. For example on last week’s paper a cargo was found filled with tomato cans but instead it was filled with speed.

The person was charged for 18 years of jail but it is not enough for all the actions that he has done. Most of the drugs sold illegally in Australia are sold by the bikie gangs such as the “Hells Angels”. These people have made the ban of cigarettes very difficult to make an effect on the society as they can still get the product even if it is illegal. Even though banning cigarettes can be extremely hard but it is done for the good of the people. Banning cigarettes can be tough as many people in the society are addicted to it and will go crazy without it.

But they would also find anyway to obtain cigarettes no matter where it is from and if it breaking the law or not. Nevertheless, the banning of cigarettes is not only helping them physically but also morally. Cigarettes can cause massive damage to our health, from ugly rotten teeth to life taking cancer; cigarettes have become a murderer of our lives. This is why no matter how hard it is to ban cigarettes we still have to do it for the health and safety of the people. Finally cigarettes should be banned but it might be difficult as there are many obstacles in the way.

Smoking Should Be Banned Essay

Smoking Should Be Banned Essay.

In this essay I am writing to persuade you to accept my opinion that smoking is an addictive drug which should be banned. Smoking is the act of inhaling and exhaling tobacco smoke through a cigarette or cigar. The drug has hundreds of disadvantages and no advantages for its many users around the world. Some of these disadvantages include the fact that it does irreversible damage to your health, it kills many people who don’t even smoke and it costs a lot of money to do.

It is for these very significant reasons that I think smoking must be made illegal worldwide. It is without a doubt that smoking is detrimental to your health.

This is evident the fact that smoking kills over 6 million people every single year. This is more deaths than AIDS, car crashes, alcohol, drug abuse, fires, suicides and murders combined. A few of the thousands of deadly diseases caused by smoking are various types of cancers, cardiovascular diseases and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Some of the 200 chemicals which make each cigarette so lethal are Cadmium used in batteries, methane found in sewer gas, nicotine used in insecticide, arsenic found in poison, methanol used in rocket fuel and finally Butane which is found in lighter fluid.

It makes no sense that something this damaging to one’s health should be legal anywhere in the world. Smoking does not only affect smokers, it affects everyone around them as well. 6 hundred thousand non-smokers die each after inhaling someone else’s second hand tobacco smoke, found on streets, in homes and at parks. Statistics show that unwanted second hand tobacco smoke unfairly caused 28% of all children deaths in 2004. I truly believe all people should have the right to a healthy, safe and second hand smoke free environment.

Cigarette packet prices may be increasing but this is by no means bringing down sales or making addicted smokers any richer. It is estimated that the average smoker spends up to five thousand dollars every year on smoking not including the thousands of dollars spent on operations such heart operations and the other medical needs of many smokers. This kind of money could be better spent on things like family holidays, taxes and bills, a cheap car or starting a small business.

If smoking where made illegal it would encourage people to spend money on much more useful and important things. Smoking painfully kills over six million addicted smokers every single year. Smoking unfairly murders thousands of non-smokers due to its deadly second hand smoke. Finally smoking costs the average smoker over five thousand dollars per year which could be spent on many much more essential things like family and health. It is for these reasons that smoking should be officially banned worldwide just like all other addictive and deadly drugs.

There are lots of negative effects of smoking. Smoking has been proven to be very dangerous for health. As one cigarette contains more than 4000 chemical substances, therefore, it causes for many dangerous diseases such as heart attacks, asthma, bronchitis or lung cancer. According to a recent report in Britain close to 3,500 people are killed each year in road accidents and 120,000 are killed by smoking. Furthermore, smoking costs governments millions of dollars because of the large number of people who need treatment in hospitals for smoking-related problems.

Moreover, passive smoking is also a major concern today. Recent research shows that non-smokers can suffer from health problems if they spend long periods of time among people who do smoke. In the UK children whose parents are smoke are three times as likely to start smoking themselves . This world would be a better place without cigarettes.

However, the decision of whether to smoke or not to smoke is for each individual to make. People should not smoke in a room or a place where there are non smokers.

Smoking has become very common and fashionable, especially among young boys. This habit usually begins at school when boys try to experiment with every new thing that they can lay their hands on. Despite the warnings given by doctors about the ill-effects of smoking, people continue to smoke. Smokers are addicted to it, and even if they want to, they cannot refrain from picking up a cigar or cigarette and puffing away. Some youngsters smoke for the sake of society and some feel that would make them appear liberated and broadminded. In the beginning, a teenager may take a few puffs from his friend’s cigarette; then comes a time when it becomes an indispensable part of his life.

Several puffs lead to the formation of a habit. Soon smoking begins to affect the health of the smoker. He becomes a chain-smoker. This smoke is toxic and the nicotine in the cigarette is known to cause cancer. It is ironic that despite the fact that every smoker is aware of the ill effects of smoking, he does not give it up. Tobacco companies are doing very well all over the world. Every packet of cigars or cigarettes has a warning inscribed in it: cigarette smoking is injurious to health.” Yet the smoker never reads this warning and even if he reads it he never pays heed to it. The government raises the price of tobacco every year. This is usually done to discourage people from smoking.

Ban Smoking On College Campuses Essay

Ban Smoking On College Campuses Essay.

For every eight smoker’s tobacco kills, one non-smoker is also killed by second hand smoke.´(American Lung Association) With a fact like that, it makes one really think about where they have been and how much smoke they have been subjected to. For me, attending college every day and walking through clouds of smoke to get from class to class really begins to put my health into perspective. Should a public place such as a college campus receive more rights than a facility such as a restaurant, department or grocery store? With an individuals health rights, the cleanliness around campus, and overall irritation of some of the students at risk, I believe college campus’ should become America’s new target against smoking and become smoke free.

When something starts to validate an individuals health rights, issues will be brought up. Smoking is something that America has discovered more and more about over the years and has found increasing numbers of facts about diseases and problems associated with it and the pollution it emits.

Anyone who passes by a smoker can inhale the excess smoke and potentially be affected. Slowly, second hand smoke is something we are starting to become more aware of and businesses around America are starting to crack down on banning smoking in their facilities. College campus’ have not been hit by this new ban, though, and continue to let students crowd around their doors to get a smoke in between classes. Because the students tend to crowd around the doors, students entering or exiting the building inhale the smoke. Personally I am an individual that does not smoke so I really do not have any desire to incur any of the dangers that are associated with it.

Also because college campuses are where students spend the majority of their day, avoiding contact with it is almost impossible. According to the US Dept. of Health, second-hand smoke has much higher levels of tar, nicotine, and carbon monoxide than the direct smoke a smoker inhales. “The Federal Environmental Protection Agency has classified second-hand smoke as a Group A carcinogen. This category includes only the most dangerous cancer-causing substance, such as asbestos and radon.” (American Lung Association) The potential effects of second hand smoke are a lot more dangerous than people expect, and the build up from inhalation can lead to serious problems for individuals in the future.

Just by simply passing by a smoker and taking a breath in and out, over time can cause damage. If this becomes an everyday routine, as one walks to and from his/her class each day they are at risk for potential problems from second hand smoke. Everyone has the right to smoke once they’ve reached the legal age, and I have no desire to discriminate against them, but if they choose to jeopardize their health it should have nothing to do with a stranger just passing by as they enjoy. A possible drive or smoke before or after they attend school might be a solution just as long as the individual isn’t on campus.

Also, with smoking, cleanliness of the campus becomes an issue. For smokers, big cement ashtrays are set up outside to collect the excess cigarette when the individual is done smoking it. These ashtrays often are not given a second glance and the cigarette butts are thrown on the ground around the campus doors. The sight of cigarette butts strewn along the sidewalks around campus is disgusting and does not do much for the lawn attempting to grow along it. When the ashtrays are used, the smell of smoke emanates from them. Pollution from the cigarettes is also an issue, whether it is coming from the cigarette and the individual smoking it outside, or from the ashtrays.

Smoke from anything causes damage to our environment and pollutes the air around it, but with cigarette smoke especially, chemicals are being emitted into the atmosphere as well. Persecution against smokers has never been my goal but when the place where I spend the majority of my day becomes a slight dumping ground for smoking, I believe some alternative needs to be made. Possibly, areas set up away from the campus specifically for smokers could be created so as not to punish college smokers but to keep the cigarette pollution in a confined area.

From some of the problems that are surrounding smoking on campus, some students have begun to get irritated. Author, Lydia Sax states, “Smoking is on the rise, physical and emotional self confidence is down, and feelings of stress are up,” for college students. We all understand that smoking relieves stress for some but with the number of smokers on college campuses, non-smokers are starting to become affected. After walking in from outside, clothes tend to smell of smoke and those allergic to the particles become affected.

Issues may be minor and tolerable to a point but when instances of individuals who do not have any desire to be affected by smoke become more and more frequent, students want a change. Second hand smoke is dangerous and the affects of smoke have only disadvantages. I think everyone is aware of the effects of smoking and those who chose to ignore them, choose to ignore them. But for those people that choose not to be affected, second hand smoke can be very irritating.

With the awareness of the dangers smoking causes, companies around the world are working to no longer allow it in their buildings. The dangers of second hand smoke and the irritants of it have finally become truly noticed. College campuses are still allowing it, and it is affecting the students. With issues concerning an individuals health rights, the cleanliness of the campus, and irritation of students, I feel that smoking should be banned from campuses. Everyone has a right to choose what or what not to subject themselves to, because second hand smoke has been proven to be just as harmful as first hand, for some people that right has been revoked.
