The author Elizabeth Scott states in “Is music a good tool for health?” that music has many beneficial effects. The effects of music are many in quantity and I intend explore and discuss about effects of music to body and mind.

One of the effects of music is to a body. Our body has limits which need some relaxation such as listening music. And listening music can help to forget about tiredness that could be hard to overcome. For example, some radio stations put some good music that will help to listeners to regain their moral or strength. Music can be the source of liquid energy

Another effect of music is to mind. Music can change state of our mind.

For example, music may bring inspiration, courage, state of calmness or state of happiness. Elizabeth said that music is helping to hospitals to heal from illnesses. I agree with her because I used to listen to music to manage my pain. Moreover, when I was high school our school used to start a week with national country song. This song will bring inspiration and creativity throughout a week.

Finally, the music may bring changes to our breathing and heart rate. Elizabeth sates that, music can help to prevent stress. Stress often occur when we are doing same tasks everyday or doing one thing at a time. Music can help to decrease our stress. Music can also be used to help to bring self awareness such as meditation. Meditation and music are function as whole and help to increase usefulness of person.

From the information given, the effects of listening music are many. We can safely conclude that music is playing vital role in our life. Using music to treat patients in hospitals is, in effect, a smart choice.

Elaine McArdle said, “The music industry is struggling with a full blown crisis”. What could possibly be pushing the music industry into a crisis one might ask, illegally downloading free music. In the essay, Up on Downloading, three Harvard Law School professors are trying to come up with different solutions to this problem that is occurring. Now that our technology has become so advanced, many people are figuring out ways to cheat the system, and when people are not paying for the music they have downloaded, the artist is not getting paid.

Artists are not the only one losing money but everyone involved producing the music is losing money as well. There is also less and less people going out and buying CD’s. I could probably not even remember the last time I purchased a CD. So how are the artists and producers suppose to make money when we are stealing from them? Zittrain, Nesson, and Fisher believe they could possibly have the solution to save the music industry.

Fisher’s model “would replace the copyright system with a government-administered compensation plan, funded by a tax on hardware and other systems used to play digital music” (McArdle, pg1).

Everyone would be able to download music for free, but everyone would have an additional tax on their internet service, blank CD’s, and any other digital device. The artists would be paid by the government based on the number of downloads their music receives. I totally disagree with this model. We already pay countless number of taxes, and many people do not even download music. Why should they be taxed on something else that does not affect them? I also feel our government has enough on their hands as it. We have had many government scandals recently and if I were an artist I would not want to be paid through the government.

The painting under discussion is Three Musicians by Pablo Picasso (1881-1973). It was painted in oil on canvas in at a villa which Picasso rented in Fontainebleu in 1921 and is currently located in the Philadelphia Museum of Art. I viewed the picture on the museum’s website. This painting stands out for me because it seems to sum up all the qualities that make Picasso such a great artist and it has a special aura I can only describe as “enigmatic”.

Picasso is arguably the greatest artists of the twentieth century, and perhaps even one of the greatest ever and this particular example illustrates just a small sample of his artistic abilities.

The painting was created at an important point in Picasso’s career as an artist. He had just completed the phases known as the blue period and the rose period, and had also spent some time exploring African motifs. In all of his different phases Picasso picked up the intellectual and cultural moods and fashions, turning them to his own uses in his art.

He had carried on painting in Paris throughout the first world war, and this painting was made during a spell of experimentation with symbolism, surrealism, and especially cubism in the art circles of the period.

It has the disjointed heads and geometric shapes that one expects from Picasso in his cubic phase but it has a strangely “posed” and distant feel, as if the figures standing there are masked and dressed up, hiding their real feelings behind the stylised costumes. There is a sadness about it, but not in the expressions of the faces, because there is no clear view of the faces, so much as in the muted shades and predominance of grays. The musicians are putting on a show, but when I first saw the picture I had a sense that there was there was something more behind this surface message.

The three figures just stand there, rather forlornly, as if to show that they are only dressing up for the part, and are not actually real musicians at all. Further research for this paper revealed to me that indeed there is a story behind the musicians and this has added to the picture’s appeal for me. The composition of the piece is rather traditional, in so far as there are three main figures, standing in a group facing the viewer. It is in a rather large format (roughly two metres square) and three sets of eyes looking through a jumble of colored shapes make a striking first impression.

The background at the top of the picture consists of vertical panels of light brown and light blue while the background at the bottom is a solid and rich orange red color. One can make out a stringed instrument on the left, a violin perhaps, a woodwind instrument in the middle which might be a recorder, and a keyboard instrument like an accordion on the right. The figure on the left wears a harlequin costume in shades of yellow and orange. The middle figure appears to wear a pierrot costume in white with a black eye mask.

The figure on the right wears a brown monk’s habit with a rope around the waist and dangling down to the right. All three have their heads covered: a black beret for the harlequin, a white cornered hat for the pierrot, and a monastic hood for the monk. No faces are visible, but all three figures have and little white circles for eyes painted over what looks like masks, and all three also have stereotypical little French-style pencil moustaches. It looks theatrical and this is underlined by the showing of open books with musical notes on them in the foreground of the painting.

The figures stand on legs which are roughly painted, with no concern for proportion in their width or perspective in the way the feet are pointing. Hands appear out of proportion and at odd angles here and there. Across the middle of the painting a brown table creates a solid horizontal block, as if the three musicians are standing behind a lectern for a formal recital. If it weren’t for the cubist style, the unsophisticated composition would fit very well into a medieval manuscript showing minstrels or monks performing in a stately hall or church.

The six elements which most closely characterize this painting are line, shape, space, texture, color, and balance and we shall look at each one of these in turn. There are many different types of line in this painting, starting with the bold black outlines of the feet, and including the fine threads in the bow and the small crosses on the brown vertical background panels. S- shaped lines are repeated in the violin, the harlequin’s collar and in various boundaries between colors, and some of them look like a human face in profile, as for example around the woodwind instrument and at the monk’s elbow.

Fingers are just straight lines on the hand shapes, and legs are equally just perpendicular lines. Vertical lines are the most common. Looking at the picture as a whole the predominant shapes are rectangles with the shorter sides at top and bottom but these are arranged above and below the table which is a strong horizontal shape in the middle of the picture. This horizontal shape is repeated in the crooked arms of the musicians. Triangles feature also, but they are generally arranged to complement a larger vertical, as in the harlequin’s trousers, or a larger horizontal as in the harlequin’s lower arm.

Organic shapes break up the geometric layout here and there, especially in the area around the heads of the three figures, but they are generally smaller in size than the geometric shapes. As one would expect, the way in which Picasso implies space is a feature of this cubist work. Obrien notes that the picture obeys “the strict cubist canon, and space is the result of flat, generally rectilinear planes alone”. Cubism, as defined by the Encylopaedia Britannica emphasizes the two dimensional surface of the picture plane and sees no need for the traditional techniques of perspective, foreshortening, modelling and chiaroscuro.

There is no attempt at realism, and in places it is hard to work out, especially in the top half of the picture, where the torsos begin and the background ends, so closely do the shapes of the figures mingle into the shapes of the background. The viewer can see the human figures when they are implied, rather than represented in a realistic way. As a result of this technique, the picture has very little depth, as if the three figures are standing on a very narrow stage and looking straight into the audience who are very close at hand.

A modern parallel composition might be found in a cartoon, where the figures are drawn like this in a square box form without much depth or differentiation from the background. Picasso has used various different textures overlapping each other, such as a cross hatch pattern on the brown vertical panels, criss-cross panels as if for collar and cuffs, rope like detail on the right. This, along with the cubist shapes, makes the painting resemble one of his earlier collages, although it is actually a traditional oil on canvas work.

The colors used are fairly bright, as one expects in a cubist painting, but they are not arranged in such a way as to emphasize the brightness. They seem to be painted with an open palette, but the painter shies away from the most glowing blues and reds, suggesting that there is a dimension of life missing from this theme. The brightest color is yellow but it is confined to the small triangles on the harlequin’s costume. There is a deep orange which predominates only at the very bottom of the picture.

Black is most often aligned with brown (rather than white or yellow) which gives the painting a subdued look, with little in the way of lively contrast. The blue, which occurs in large blocks, is too pale to provide a good contrast with the orange, and there is something disturbing about the way that the warm red pulls the eye down to the bottom of the picture. There is no corresponding sky equivalent, or light or even brightness at the top of the painting, but instead a dull brown horizontal stripe. The colors are indoor colors, speaking of confinement and sadness rather than joy.

The three figures are in a flat and static pose which Piot calls “solidity of construction”. She sees the three “soldered together with each figure fitting into the others to form a balanced construction, an intelligent arrangement” . Other critics see echoes of pagan religious works, for example Richardson who describes the group as “effigies, such as a shaman might fashion out of bits and pieces”. There is purpose in the three part construction, and they do appear to belong together and balance each other out in space, just as musicians in a trio are intended to do.

There is general agreement among the critics that the three figures in the painting are connected with Picasso himself and his two immediate friends from his life in Paris in the years immediately after the first World War. The website of the Philadelphia Museum of art interprets the harlequin as Picasso, the Pierrot figure in the middle as the French symbolist poet Guillaume Appollinaire, and the monk as Max Jacob, another poet who had just recently taken himself off to a monastery.

The musical instruments are the kind used for folk music, and the costumes are related to the comic figures of Italian opera and Spanish carnival. Picasso had painted the harlequin before and had associated himself with this happy/sad clown persona, an image, perhaps, for the emotional turmoil he the artist felt inside himself. He was a prolific artist, but he led a very complicated family life, and was often troubled by financial hardship and stormy relationships.

Picasso had travelled widely in Spain, France and Italy by this time, and he had worked in theatres designing sets. The imagery certainly is drawn from this area. The picture may well be, as Caws suggests an attempt to mark the passing of Picasso’s bohemian past, and his transition into a new neo-classical phase of art, leaving cubism and all its associations behind. She seems to go a little too far, however, in suggesting that the three figures represent the Holy Trinity, with Picasso as God the Father, Max Jacob as the Son, and Guillaume Appollinaire as the Holy Spirit.

The mood of the painting is not spiritual. If any such reference is hinted at by Picasso, then at most it would be an ironic one. Richardson sees in the yellow and orange of the harlequin’s costume a reference to the Catalan flag, which bears these colors in a stripe formation. He also notes that the fishnet mask that Pierrot wears could be an indication that the costume is home made, and an example of working class carnival costume rather than high brow theatre or opera.

There is no need, however, to pin down an absolute source for these details, since Picasso often chose synthesis and juxtaposition, sometimes even in the same painting, to illustrate different kinds of interrelatedness in human ideas and experiences. The attribution of these three artists to the musicians does appear to be valid. Appollinaire had just recently died, and with Jacob now retiring from the busy world to a life of contemplation, the poor Harlequin is the only one of the three who is left to carry on the artistic work that they accomplished together.

The awful experiences of the war are over, but the survivor appears to mourn what has been lost. The work undoubtedly has lasting value. This painting, along with a similar composition painted in the same year where the musicians are seated, is regarded as one of the finest examples of “synthetic cubism”, a refinement of the earlier analytic cubism. After studying the painting in great detail for this assignment, it has become clear to me that there is more humour there than the critics seem to suggest. I see this especially in the way that the little moustaches are painted.

All three musicians have the same form of moustache, but each one is painted in a slightly different way – the harlequin has one black and one white half, the pierrot has white with black stripes, and the monk has a fuller shape with the black and white halves in reverse order from the harlequin. It as if they are putting on little hidden smiles, and playing with the viewer, showing how they all share a secret joke but will not say exactly what it was. Reference List. Jersey Boys is about the story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons (Four Seasons) made extraordinary music under the genre of rock and pop. The story took place back in the 1950’s when the Four Seasons were just starting up. Location of the tale is in New Jersey. The purpose of Jersey boys is to tell a tale about the hardships that Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons went through to make their music and also other personal and emotional feelings that were endured by the band.

I enjoyed the play because the story and music is very interesting, unique and entertaining.

I have seen the play before in Las Vegas and I must say that the cast in Las Vegas was much better than the one I saw on Thursday night. The reason is because it went more in-depth with the story and also played every single hit that the band had made.

Also, the singers in Las Vegas were much more professional and sounded better because the actor portraying Frankie Valli did not have such a high pitched voice as the one in Curran Theatre. My favorite composition from the band was Beggin because the tempo and beat was so fast-paced and it was impressive how the band had bright stage lights and fascinating dance moves.

The music contained catchy rhythms and beats. Some notes would stretch out to make a nice vocal sound and some were just quick beats from the drums. The staging was very flashy because they had different stage lights with different colors for each part of the story. The costumes were very well suited. They actors wore fancy suits and some had a fancy top hot to match their costume. I thought the the whole play went fairly well and the audience seemed to really enjoy it. The music was pleasant and relaxing, the actors were spot on with no mistakes during the show and the crowd was very enthusiastic.

The only part I had a slight problem about was the singer. His voice was way too high pitched and it didn’t go well as a cover for the original compositions. My overall opinion would be a 4 out of 5 (4/5) because some of the compositions were not performed well and the music wasn’t as smooth as the original compositions. The melody was virtuous which made the texture just as good. The rhythm was excellent along with the harmony but there were a few not so good structure of the music so to speak. Overall I enjoyed the music and performance.

The great things about the music were stated in the paragraph above but there are a few negatives to the cast’s performance. Although they used the same ternary and binary forms for the pieces, something about the way they did it just didn’t go smoothly. I believe it was because of the tempo of the song. The tempo was slowed down a bit during some of the compositions. However I really enjoyed my time at the musical with my mom. She seemed to really enjoy it as well. She had the same insights as I did about the musical.

To begin with, technology has progressed a great deal, which has influenced music produced recently. An example of this is auto tune, which has been used by countless artists; Rihanna, Chris Brown, Ke$ha, Kanye West and Justin Bieber are only a small number of these.

This means that music these days is much less natural, and artist’s voices are often entirely altered.

Another way the development of technology has changed how we listen to pop music, is websites on the Internet such as YouTube, which allow us to explore different genres of music much more easily.

Since TVs, radios, and cellular devices have been made more accessible, advertising for new music has become much more common, this means that we are introduced to new genres and styles of music.

The development of technology has provided us with an overall easier access to music, and has opened us to different types of music that we would not have originally listened to. It also provided artists with a chance to use new types of editing to change the sound of their music.

Music is popular with children, teenagers and adults. More often than not, teenagers are seen with mp3s and earphones, but children are often singing music from TV shows, and adults singing songs from ‘back in the day’. In the 50s, pop music stopped being a genre listened to by children and adults alike, but started being specifically for teens.

Artists like Justin Bieber, One Direction, Elvis and The Wanted used sex appeal to make their music sell. Elvis was nicknamed ‘Elvis Pelvis’ for the way he moved his hips, and most boy bands are known better for their good looks than their music. Younger artists are now coming in with new music, and their music is appreciated more by teens who feel more of a relation with them, because of the closer age gap.

Music and books are active ingredients in our lives. They possess so much influential power which we use those influences everyday of our lives without even realizing it. We all have a favorite book that we read in elementary school or high school that taught us a lesson or that we related to. With that comes this influence that stays with us throughout our lives, we are able to take that influence and turn it into the reason we are the way we are or why we tend to make the decisions that we make.

Most of us also have a favorite song or artist that sings a song that can take us to a certain place in our lives that was a happy time or even a sad time. We relate words and melody in a song to those influences we let take hold of us and frame our mind set in similar situations that make us so fond of the song or a particular type of music.

Whether it be books or music, we are influenced by these two things, but which is the most beneficial? Books will challenge us and force an influence that is more positive than what music can bring to the table.

Not all is bad in the music and books world. Let’s face it, we can learn tons from both of these forms of art. When it comes to music, just like books, there is a wide variety to choose from. The scope of books The different styles of books and music vary from person to person and not one style is better that the other. Music has many genres; rap, hip hop, r&b, country, sould, classical, jazz, blue grass, alternative and more. Books has many genres as well; mystery, western, teen, childrens and more.

They both possess the power to bring out many emotions. Books have been developing over the years and the stories have gotten more intense and diverse. Music has also come a long way throughout time and so much has developed with the music scene. Certain types of music, as well as books, can reach people of all different ages and bring something out in them that nothing else can.

Music today, that is most popular, has all sorts of curse words and disgusting messages in the song lyrics. Books can only convey so much. A book that a child would read in high school would have less of an influence for the simple fact that I don’t think many kinds like to read anyways. There is so much going on with the popular music scene, as far as it shaping the way that our kids dress nowadays to the decisions that they choose to make.

A child can tell you what the latest gossip is about their favorite musical artist is, rather than the title of the last book they read. If they were given an assignment to read in school, most would probably tell you that they have never really read a book completely that they were assigned to read in school. Most of the time it is the work of SparkNotes, a website most kids trust to tell them the summary of chapters of a particular book, that does the reading for them. So the influence of music has such a greater effect than a book would on a child.

In conclusion books force an influence that is more positive that what music can bring to the table, but how does any of it mean anything if we have no control over those influences? Music can be a lovely thing for us to learn from but where does it end and where does it begin? Books contain so many lessons to be had and adventures to be made, but how can we take hold of them and all of the influence there? It is up to the reader and the love of music to decide what will influence them today, and the difference it will make tomorrow.

Weather it may be through music or books, there are several variations on communication, just depends on how you want to target them in order to get the information across. Both music and books have similarities as well as differences. Each has its’ own advantages and disadvantages. Music produces sound that is also a form of art, where books are illustrated pieces of paper which are presented in a different way than music; such as written form.

Music and books can have advanced effects on your life in different ways, like music can have more of an effect on you then a book would. With in doing so comparing the two; they have both been traced back in time to as far as the ninth century B. C. , Books back then had been written on stone, tree bark, metals and clay while music had been around for about forty thousand years.

Both music and book have been passed down from generation to generation.

Music from where it started until today has many genres such as; Jazz, Hip Hop, Rap, Folk, Oldies, County, R&B, and so much more, books come in various ways such as; magazines, news papers, and journals. Due to its advantages, music is considered more. Music has an advantage where it uses sound while books use the eyes to relay the messages, for some people hearing is an advantage to seeing and vice versa. In order to read a book you have to be educated where music you don’t need the prior education, and you only have to understand the music to understand the message the singer is putting across.

Books will give you information that you are looking for while music gives you the information while as entertaining you at the same time. Many people at one time can listen to much while with a book only one person can MUSIC VS. BOOKS 3 read it at a time. Some books can carry hidden messages that the author is trying to get across, while music is direct and to the point. Books tend to stimulate mental journeys and expanded awareness of realities different from our own. This is a very true statement, because a person can use his or her own experiences and compare them to a different reality.

When a person reads about an explorer and his many adventures, it can make he or she think about testing their limits and own abilities and go out and pursue their own journeys. Both books and music need parental guidance. There are so many different vulgarities that song writers and authors use, it makes parents worry about what their children read and/or listen to. Different types of music can give either a negative or positive impact on people, sometimes music can give both negative and positive impacts.

It truly depends on how a person interprets a certain song or lyric. Books have almost the same affect as music in this aspect. Books can be very useful and eye-opening, and they can also be misleading. Most generally non-fiction books and biographies tend to be useful, where fictional books can be misleading, for example, a book can say that there are talking bears when in reality bears and other animals do not have this ability. Music and books can be great influences as well as bad influences sometimes.

It all depends on how a person acts, reacts, and interprets what he or she reads or hears. Both music and books can impact a person’s life in a positive way. Music allows someone to express themselves and his or her emotions. A book allows a person to escape reality and enter into an alternate reality, and allows his or her mind to partake in events that they would never be able to in real life. The Wizard of Oz is one of the biggest American Musicals in film. It has become known world wide, it is apart of our American popular culture, and is best known of all films. It was based on the novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz written by L. Frank Baum in the 1900s. It was produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayar in the year of 1939. This film just hit the end of the “Golden Age of the Musical” that started in the early 1930s.

MGM benefited greatly from the hit of the rebirth of musicals.

It’s known for the use of technicolor which is a system of making color motion pictures by means of superimposing the three primary colors to produce a final colored print (Websters Dictionary), fantasy storytelling, interesting and creative characters, and the musicality imbedded into it. There was also a complex use of special effects for film in that specific time era which helped the film receive special notice. MGM’s film had many awards but one of the most famous one was the award of Best Original Song for “Over the Rainbow.

It was sung by Judy Garland as Dorothy just five minutes into the movie after she was trying to get her Aunt and Uncle to come to a realization of what happened to her poor little dog Toto. In the beginning of the film “Over the Rainbow” is played by MGM orchestra over the starting credits. There is a big taste of fantasy in this particular film which kind of in a way departs away from the musical genre. There is many scenes of flying monkeys, and the wicked witch of the West and Glinda, the good witch of the South, and the munchkins, and talking lions, and a tin man, and a talking scarecrow.

There are many musical scenes that I am fond of in The Wizard of Oz like the scarecrow’s song “If I only had a Brain”, the tin man’s song “If I only had a Heart” and the lion’s song “If I only had the Nerve”. The Wizard of Oz was the famous directors, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayar’s, most popular musical in his time. Starring Judy Garland as Dorothy Gale was one of the best professional choices MGM had in his career. She was the stand out in the whole film.

Also starring Frank Morgan as the wizard, Ray Bolger as the scarecrow, Jack Haley as the Tin Man, Bert Lahr as the cowardly lion, Billie Burke as Glinda the good witch of the south, and Margaret Hamilton as the wicked witch of the west. “Somewhere over the Rainbow” became Judy Garland’s signature song. She has been in 32 of MGM’s films and she won a Golden Globe Award, Grammy Awards and the Special Tony Award. She was then nominated the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in “A Star is Born”. Everyone of the lead rolls in The Wizard of Oz has been in many of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayar’s other films.

The DAW is a software environment in which you create and compose the music and it is one of the most essential components in one’s music studio. To put it simply, it’s music making software. VST (Virtual Studio Technology) synthesizers and effects are also a must if you’re going to start making music digitally with a computer. VSTi’s (VST instruments) are virtual synthesizers that produce different kind of sounds. You can use them just like you would use real hardware , only difference being that they’re software and you install them just like any other application, then open them within a DAW to compose melodies and make music.

The most common thing that prevents beginners from getting a full sounding song is not filling the “box” that is volume, panning, and frequency. The typical situation is this: as more and more sounds are layered together, the audio may start to “clip”. (Clipping is a form of waveform distortion that occurs when an amplifier is over-driven and attempts to deliver an output voltage or current beyond its maximum capability) Therefore, one would turn the gain down on the each channel of the mixer so it doesn’t clip. But then, it sounds quiet.

In order to fix this, compression and (EQ) equalization come in to play. Another issue novice producers may face is when too many conflicting frequencies are overlapping in a mix. As a result of overlapping sounds, the song may sound “muddy”. To prevent mud, you must consciously keep in mind what range of frequencies you are adding with each new part. Frequencies will overlap, no matter what instruments you choose. A lot of VST instrument plugins have presets that sound very good on their own, but when thrown together with other presets, they clash.

A lot of these presets are full sounding, filling up a lot of low and high end. Unless you carve out the clashing frequencies using EQ, you will get a muffled, muddy sound when throwing presets together. For example, two bass sounds on top of each other will interfere, resulting in a strange sounding phase effect. If you want to use two instruments that use up the same frequency spectrum, you’ll want to carve out the highs on one and carve out the lows on the other equalizer. The end result of adding equalization and modifying volume should add up to a track with a full, clear sound.

The chapter further contends that in the African-derived context, no distinction is made between sacred and secular, and that popular festivals like carnival, rara, junkannu, or gumbay are rooted in an Afro-religious mode.

In this respect, one finds commonality of themes, the major ones being: cultural affirmation; aspirations to freedom; and resistance to oppression as expressed in rituals such as Vodou, Santeria, Candomble, Kumina, or Shango; popular dance-hall styles like “rasin” in Haiti, reggae in Jamaica, samba-reggae in Brazil; and carnival musics like calypso and soca in Trinidad & Tobago. The mix of culture seems to justify a departure from traditional presentation of music and culture of the Caribbean.
