What is critical thinking?
What is critical thinking, how can you be objective, and how should you look at unbiased data to decide or form an argument? Both videos are great professors; I can’t control the opening in Sowell’s interview where he mentions Conservative views. This is about Sowell, not the person who posted the video. I want you to see how Sowell breaks down truth through data vs twisted data. You can emotionally respond to an issue, but don’t let emotion override facts. This is about understanding evidence-based arguments vs emotionally based arguments based on feelings and no facts. Dr Sowell is a brilliant educator who has written countless books on important topics.
The second video touches on similar points with Dr. Wilfred Reilly. I think it is important for you to understand these points because we will discuss them throughout the semester. Watch the videos and follow the directions for writing a response.
Assignment: I have three questions to ask. The first two relate to Dr Sowell, the last question refers to Dr Reilly. This should be written in essay format using APA or MLA. I should not see a homework style format, i.e., 1. blahh, blahh, blahh, 2. blahh, etc… Your paragraph formatting, topic sentences and transitions should demonstrate to the reader where the questions differentiate or transition. I am not giving a page expectation. I expect to see how you demonstrate critical thinking through your writing with thorough and thoughtful answers. Short answers never demonstrate critical thinking. I don’t think you have to write a lot either, I am just asking for thoughtful responses.
Dr. Reilly critiques by discussing scientific data. This is a good video from chapter 2 in CRIM 100, where you learn how to measure crime and victimization. He makes great points about scientific facts and empirical research versus emotional beliefs.
This will be a 20-point assignment.
- Listen to the points about even representation, random histories, and individual personal choices. How does this relate to the decade-old discussion about police representation of their community or any other group in our society?
2. What important point does Dr. Sowell make about discrimination, and how does it explain income differences? Hint: around the time, he used Malaysians and Jews as examples.
3. Using Dr Reilly’s video, what are your thoughts on how emotions and propaganda have driven this narrative?
