Beyond the intention of a life story to present a narrative account of the events in one’s existence in this world is its main purpose to convey messages and lessons which are worthy of emulation and praise. In fact, the essence of autobiography depends on its impact to people and the society. Life stories come and go but what are remembered are those which have sincerely touched other lives. Since an autobiography is a perfect medium to tell the world of one’s happiness or sorrow, of pleasure or pain, and of success and failure; it clearly and effectively serves it purpose of being a mirror of one’s life.

Surely, a life tale about one’s family, career, love and existence tells so much which manifests that the story teller is in charge of everything. This leads to the perspective that in an autobiography, the author has all the say and is not restricted to tell all. Clear manifestations of the said freedom of expression are the life stories of two African-American sisters who preferred to be tagged as “colored” rather than black women.

In a 1993 book and later in a 1999 television-movie titled “Having Our Say: The Delany Sisters’ First 100 Years,” centenarian sisters Sarah and Elizabeth Delany, assisted by reporter Amy Hill Hearth, opened to the world the successful lives of two strong-willed women. Both the film and book told of the stories of the sisters who battled their ways against racism, sexism and how their quest for education and eventual attainment of respectable positions in the society, have ultimately redeemed their lives.

Emily Mann’s teleplay is based from the book written by the Delany sisters themselves in collaboration with New York Times Reporter Heart, played by Amy Madigan in the movie. As established by the book, the teleplay told the more than 100 years each stories of sisters Sadie, played by actress Diahann Carroll and Bessie, played by actress Ruby Dee based from their testimonies to Heart and own recollections of the events in their respective lives.

The teleplay is just like the book which revealed how the Delany sisters, along with their other eight siblings, were raised by their father, who was a former slave but eventually became the first black Episcopal bishop in the United States and their mother, who came from a mixed yet free race. All of the Delany children had college education and succeeded in their respective professions during a period when black people of African-American race are barely anticipated to get even a diploma from secondary school. Of the ten children, it was Sadie and Bessie who gained much prominence.

Sadie, being the elder of the two protagonists became the first “colored” woman who had a teaching profession and eventually allowed to teach in New York while Bessie was the second African-American woman to practice her dentistry profession. Somewhat different from the written work where the stories were directly told by the Denaly sisters, the teleplay showed how actress Carroll and Dee effectively gave life to the characters of Sadie and Bessie who deals with their respective ordeals and misfortunes which they experienced in a span of century of their lives (“Having Our Say” Motion Picture, 1999).

The success of the movie is attributed to the book itself which established the foundation of the stories of the Delany sisters. It was not an easy assignment for reporter Heart as the Delany sisters were withdrawn at the start but after eighteen months of story-telling, Sadie and Bessie were delighted as they were finally given the opportunity to have their say.

Important accounts of history, as told by the Delany sisters, were not only conserved by the words “Having Our Say” but it later prospered into a best-selling book, eventually an award-winning teleplay under the production of Camillle Cosby, Jeffrey Grant and Judith James as well as s Tony-award nominated play in Broadway by Mann. The book was empowered by the details of the doubled just like when the feisty Sadie stated that no one can censor or edit what she likes to say. She goes on to say, “I’m a hundred-and-one years old and at may age, honey, I can say what I want!

” (Delany, Delany & Heart 11). The teleplay, on the other hand, was an absorbing drama as performed by Carroll and Dee. While the performances tend to manifest into a caricature-like, Carroll and Dee succeeded in portraying the Delany sisters’ harmonizing prowess and most essentially their distinct relationship (“Having Our Say” Motion Picture, 1999). An emphasis on the movie’s themes, motifs and symbols are the components from which this critical review is to be based. The film is significant for its authority derived from name-calling or naming.

The Delany sisters noted how their parents called each other and how it was imparted to all of them that black Americans like them are better off when not called only by their first names and rather by their family names as this implies respect. Additionally, the Delany sisters’ search for education or college degrees allowed them to be pioneers in various higher education facilities where their educational achievements earned them their needed respect in the society. Another theme is the dominance of sexism and racism during that period.

It was successfully shown in the movie how the Delany sisters fight racial and women discrimination as manifested by several measures and people. Their determination to fight for their rights, battle to achieve something while faced with odds and their eventual triumph are the very essence of “Having Our Say. ” It was also evident in the film how the race colors of white and black were exploited. As they did not allow to be called black Americans, the Delany sisters’ efforts to insert color distinction, as depicted by their preference to be called as “colored,” are also notable.

Equally important are the images of the Rebby Boys and seating arrangements which have escalated the sisters’ concern over racism. Lastly, the symbols like the Delany home representing order and security, the painted China Doll indicating forward movements and the Halley’s Comet ultimately manifesting the passion and commitment of the Delany sisters to emerge and succeed contrary to the conventional existence of black Americans during that era.

“Having Our Say,” therefore is more than just personal version of American history because the public was demonstrated by the Delany sisters on how to live to tell the tale, succeed and accept life despite hindrances along the way. There are several important issues and elements that are critical in the study of the psychological aspect of each individual particularly on the focusing of explaining his or her present condition or behavioral characteristics.

On this aspect, a specific approach in line to the psychological research is employed to determine the relevant elements, contributory factors and the influential system to the present behavioral characteristics of each person.

Several of the common approaches to this research aspect are the observation method, profiling, interview and others in which the researchers try to uncover and determine the possible cause and contributory element explaining the present behavioral characteristic and psychological problem of the subject.

Through determining the primary root and the possible influences to the manifestation of the problem, further understanding can be facilitated which promotes awareness to the psychological characteristic of the involved person. As an actual example of the aspect of psychological research, consider the exercise conducted by the author of this paper wherein a specific approach were used to determine, understand, and explain the possible causes and the significant influences to the development of certain behavioral issue of a chosen subject.

The subject established in this exercise is a female classmate of the researcher that displays a certain critical behavioral condition namely the alcoholism and smoking problem of the said person. As the person of this exercise, the researcher wishes to determine and the primary causes and specific influences to the development of this personal issue which is manifested in her social interaction. As a primary approach, the researcher first resorted to observation method and background profiling wherein she learned that the behavioral problem of the subject is commonly displayed when she is with peers of her social group.

As observed, the likely need for the said behavioral issue only comes or is displayed when the subject is socializing, bonding with friends, and during social events. It is also noted that the subject spends most of her time for the said activities making the manifestation of her behavioral problems to be common in her daily routine and contributing to the development of this psychological issue. Proceeding after the observation is the interview approach wherein the researcher will evaluate the said psychological issue through based on the exposition and perspective of the subject.

As she relates, the said issues namely the alcoholism and smoking have already became a habitual act on her part. It first started as her medium to deal with her personal problems and as a bonding grounds for her peers and friends which eventually developed into a behavioral routine. She also expressed that the said actions and issues are only exhibited while she is engage to social interaction and activities and are only passive when she is alone. Another particular element she expressed emphasis on her story is the issue of her family situation wherein she must also deal with the separation and certain conflicts between her parents.

Living under these conditions, she started to resort to external means to adapt to her situation and gain stability over her problems. Based from the facts and factors gathered through the different approaches employed in determining the nature of the behavioral condition and issue of the subject, a form of evaluation will be conducted to determine the possible nature of the said issue. As based from the observation and interview, the alcoholism and smoking problem of the subject is mainly attributed to two specific condition namely her personal family situation and her social characteristics.

First, the behavioral problem of the subject manifest as her form of her adaptation process to her situation particularly with the separation of her parents. It is also established that the behavioral problem of the subject also started during this period making this among the primary causes of her problem. Second, is her social characteristic wherein the problem manifests as her approach of socializing, interacting and bonding with her friends who also share the same behavioral condition. It is likely that the subject learned the said behavior from her social group.

Also, the constant practice and involvement of the subject of the said behavior with her social group led to the routinary development of the said act leading to its integration to her personality. Leading up to the possible solution, two particular approaches are important to address this behavioral problem effectively namely, to tackle her family situation and address the parental guidance crucial to her withdrawal and the change of her environment particularly separation from her social group who also practice the said problem.

These two particular issues are the main causes of her behavioral problem as established from the conducted critical observation research. From the determination of the primary causes and the significant contributory elements, an effective approach to address the problem can be created through tackling the fundamental factors leading to the development of the general issue. Indeed, as displayed in the result of the conducted critical observation research, the application of the said aspect in the field of psychology promotes critical understanding and effective intervention measures for the behavioral issue and problems involved.

Through determining the possible causes, the related circumstances, the contributory factors as related from observation, profiling, and interview, the involved researcher can draw an effective approach to intervene and address the problem at hand towards the development of a positive and healthy behavioral characteristic for the subject of the matter. As a tribute to his son’s death, Ben Johnson wrote the poem “On My First Son” to show his great love for him. In the poem, Johnson indirectly blames himself for the death of his son in a rhetorical way. Seven years of raising his son gave Johnson so much hope which ended really soon with his son’s death. His son’s death caused him to suffer from too much agony and lamentation. Johnson has arguments on the poem which were an attempt to analyze the meaning of his son’s death and how the plans that he made in preparation for his son’s future ended in an instant.

Johnson considers his son as the “best piece of poetry” (Johnson) for him which is best described by the words on this poem. The poem speaks about father-son relationship as a whole. It has a straightforward structure that best describes the emotion of the poet. Specifically, it talks about the love and grief of Johnson when his son died.

Losing his eldest son was really hard for him to accept. Although he argued on the poem that through death, his son was able to escape aging and suffering, he comes out with a conclusion not to love too much in order to let go of a loved one who died.

By going through each line in the poem, this paper aims to analyze how Ben Johnson put into words what he felt regarding his first child’s death. Contrasting words were reflected in this poem which shows the readers the mixed emotions that Johnson felt. He conveyed his feelings of sorrow but later on contradicted it by saying that he should be happy because death brought his son to a better place. Johnson is speaking for himself in the poem. Being a devout Christian, he allows readers to contemplate on how they should envy the state of his son.

His son’s death led him to a state of God’s keeping. The poem was written in such a way as if Johnson is talking directly to his son. The poet tries to put into words his intense feelings about the death of his son and how he regards his son as the most precious person for him. Talking face to face with his son, Johnson tells his son how he values him using the words “child of the right hand” (Johnson). This suggests his son’s great worth to him. As a good writer, he also tries to express his frustration of losing his heir who can to continue his work.

Looking on the religious side of the author, he highly relates the state of his son the way that Jesus is looked upon as the right hand of God. Johnson values his son as his supposedly right hand who vanished early in time. The second line talks about the poet’s fault as he has placed hoped too much on his son and on what lies for him in the future. The poet also realizes in the poem that everyone’s life is a loan from God which will be taken back through death. Too much hope for his son paid off after seven years through death “on the just day’ (Johnson).

This is a metaphorical phrase saying how each people really belonged to God. The fifth line of the poem tries to explain how Johnson wanted to stop being possessive as a father to his son. He wishes to give up being a father to his dead son since he is trying to convince himself that the boy is better off dead. He argues paradoxically why there is a need for lamentation. He points out contradictions through the line “Will man lament the state he should envy? ” by explaining that there is no need for him to grief because his son is already in heaven.

Convincing himself that he should let go of his worries is the main point of this line. Johnson wants to deliver the idea of how his son was able to escape the difficulties of life in this line: “To have so soon ‘scap’d world’s and flesh’s rage, And if no other misery, yet age” (Johnson). By dying young, his son would no longer go through the difficult and miserable experience of growing old. Johnson wants to clearly deliver this message by saying how his son was able to escape this cruel fate. In the last four lines, Johnson honors his son.

He commemorates his son’s death by saying that he is now in a state where he can “Rest in soft peace” (Johnson). Johnson casts all his doubts and fears on his son’s death because he fully entrusts the fate of his son to God. Being a notable writer he honors his son as “his best piece of poetry” (Johnson). This is a reflection of how much he loves his son and values him more than anything he wrote. In conclusion, the last two lines of his poem were written as an advice for himself on clinging too much on people and his writings: “For whose sake henceforth all his vows be such, As what he loves may never like too much” (Johnson).

These lines imply that he should not be too emotionally involved with the things that he loves because it will be too painful when he loses them. To end the poem, he expresses his idea on how his great love for his son caused him death because loving too much is a sin. Johnson wanted to move forward and be more optimistic that whatever he loves next, he will not love it “too much”. The poem wants to address the author’s own meditations. Through the poem, Johnson gave his son’s death a clearer meaning. Ben Johnson wrote the poem from a father’s point of view.

He wanted the readers to be aware of his feelings about the early death of his son and how great is his loss by experiencing death of a loved one. The poem reflects his affectionate side as a father. At the same time, it is mixed with satire in order to give more artistry and better understanding in determining life’s extremes and hardships. The process of education is a complex one. Pedagogy, which refers largely to the style of the transmittal of education also involves a complex set of processes and procedures. There are times, however, that pedagogy is enforced and that almost all students are expected to catch up with the pedagogy. This approach can sometimes be tedious to those who have learning difficulties. For one, there might be language and other barriers. Given these barriers and difficulties, the learners do have different levels in which they apply the pedagogy effectively.

Because of this issue, it is not only the methods that matter but the situation of the learner instead. In order to implement a humanizing pedagogy, the needs, limitations and style of learning of the learners should be taken into account. Otherwise, it would show that the learners are working for the methods rather than the methods being used for the benefit of the learners. This might take a while before traditional approaches are done away with and finally put in place a humanizing pedagogy that does not only focus on the methods but rather, one that focuses on the learners and their ability to grasp the lessons being taught to them.

This can only be done by recognizing economic, political and social barriers in addition to the educational barriers. Another musing that arises because of this discussion is that education at times functions as a training ground that intends to produce technicians rather than producing well-educated people. As such, pedagogy should enable humans to realize their full potential and that is what is meant when people are talking about humanizing pedagogy. Almost every aspect of human life is rife with customs and culture.

In this regard, the classroom is no exception. Although the learners who attend these classrooms come from different backgrounds socially, religiously, economic, and political. Yet, when they enter the schools, they manage to create their own culture, which does not necessarily center on the teacher as the focal point. Rather, there are small details of the interactions between learners, between learners and teachers, and there are those processes within the classroom that warranted the creation of such classroom culture.

Given this classroom culture, the teacher should be sensitive enough to employ a pedagogy that makes full use of this classroom culture. Such move will create a level of respectability because of the display of sensitivity on the part of the teacher. If, however, the culture created within the classroom has considerable break with some of the established rules of conduct, it is also the duty of the teacher to gently correct such mistakes and point out the correct way of doing things.

Lastly, there are a large number of innovations going on in the area of Information Technology. Education has not escaped this trend and multimedia products and softwares are now being used to enhance the educational experience of learners. New technologies, however, can only do so much, especially if teachers and students alike are not very familiar with such gadgets. It cannot be denied, however, that new technology is enabling new forms of relationships between the school and students.

The advent of the Internet has made it easier to access information—such has literally become a click away. Excessive reliance on new technology, however, may not be very beneficial in the long run as the skills and talents of individuals will be replaced by the functionalities of the new technologies. Kanyadaan by Vijay Tendulkar, is a wonderful book that sheds light on the sensitive issue of spousal abuse and through a story of a wife caught in the web of domestic violence, shows the reader the minute intricacies of such situations that cause the victim from protesting against or reporting the abuse, and hence, allow the abuse to continue (Tendulkar). The thesis of the book revolves around the notion that perhaps the incorporation and implementation of the caste system in marriages is the safest bet to increase the chances of the success of the marriage.

The poignant account of a young girl being subjected to ill treatment by her husband who is of a caste different to hers leaves the reader pondering upon the legitimacy of the modern day liberal views of stamping out the caste system from marriage traditions (p. 77). Tendulkar introduces us to a girl belonging to a sophisticated family that is revered for its strength in politics. The girl, as we see her, has been brought up to respect and appreciate modern approaches to culture.

She decides to marry a man who is not from her caste. We see that the girl gets inspired by the man who is a poet and she finds herself helplessly enchanted by his poetry (p. 15). But the book does not center on the girl as much as it does on her father. It is the liberal ideas that the father teaches to his daughter that give her the courage and will to break the caste-based marriage tradition as she goes on to marry the man, Dalit.

Unfortunately for her, after getting married to Dalit, she realizes how mistaken she was and that Dalit was not at all the man he appeared to be (p. 65). Societies must evolve in order to succeed in the world, and in order to evolve in a manner that allows for the attainment of the same, it is necessary that the engineering of the society during this course of evolution is performed correctly.

It is the cultural trends which dominate and are allowed to dominate by the people of the society that eventually engineer the evolution of the society, and after having gone through Tendulkar’s perspective, one cannot help but realize the significance of marriage in this very process, and the role that the caste system plays in it. I believe that regarding the case we see in Tendulkar’s Kanyadaan, perhaps it was the caste-based marriage system that keeps us safe from falling into situations such as the one in which the politicians daughter found herself.

However, it is not merely the caste-based marriage system that Tendulkar has brought into debate through Kanyadaan, but also the fact of that a number of domestic problems that are prevalent in society are going unnoticed and a few are of such a horrible nature that a person can neither escape them, nor oppose them since in neither of the two actions will a person be able to avoid the pain that these domestic problems inflict.

The most serious of these problems, as Tendulkar shows us, is domestic violence and domestic abuse. For instance, we see occasions in Kanyadaan where Dalit, the husband, chooses to drink and abuse his wife, and the helpless wife can do nothing about it. We see in Kanyadaan how not only is the girl who chooses to cross the barriers of tradition for her love, affected by it, but also her father who was the person who developed the values of modernism in her.

The father is helpless to do anything to prevent the pain that his daughter is going through (p. 43). This comes as all the more reason to understand that unless a complete understanding of the parties involved in the marriage has been reached it is unwise to carry out the nuptials since once the process has begun the husband and the wife are rarely in a social position where separation is an option. What follows is the barrage of unexpected circumstances out of which domestic violence, as we see in Kanyadaan, is often one.

From Tendulkar’s perspective, one cannot help but recognize the significance of the caste-based marriage system and the significance of its role in the evolution of a society. The book leaves no doubt in the readers mind that the abolishment of the caste based marriage system is an issue that requires serious attention since it cannot be under any circumstance be considered a success formula for all cases. On a more personal note, upon having gone through the book, I found myself to be in agreement with many of the critics who had reviewed this book.

The caste-based marriage system was indeed a system that had its advantages. But I am doubtful about the reasoning that I came across in many of the reviews of the book. It is important to note that Tendulkar has shown only one case in which an inter-caste marriage has failed. One would make a decision using deductive reasoning by generalizing an argument and coming to a conclusion by generalizations that they may have witnessed over time and that is how they came to their conclusion. The text states that deductive reasoning arrives at a specific conclusion based on generalizations (Moore, B. & Parker, R. , 2012). The process of deductive reasoning aid in understanding an argument is that even though one would not want to come to an conclusion based on deductive reasoning it is needed to aid in the decision making process because it plays a huge part in a person’s critical thinking process.

A person needs critical thing to be able to come to a sensible and logical decision which in tales using both deductive and inductive reasoning. Using both gives a full scope or both sides of an argument thus usually giving all the important information needed to come to a logical decision and also using critical thinking.
