Business schools look keenly at your career goals because they know that students who are clear about their goals make the most of MBA programs. They are able to focus on relevant parts of the curriculum, make use of the on-campus activities to their advantage and by doing well in their careers become good ambassadors for their programs.

You need to share goals that have captured your imagination and burn in your heart. Imagine you have just graduated from your dream school after two years of rigorous study.

What kind of work would you like to do now?

Think about responsibilities you want to shoulder, positions you want to hold, challenges you want to meet, skills you want to build, and contributions you want to make. Be specific – which industry, what role, what would you like to do and achieve?

Reflecting on all this will take time. Be patient with yourself. Keep the questions in your head and pen down your thoughts as they pop up.

Working this way prepare a career progress graph in your mind. Keep in mind the fact that your aim here is to fulfill your aspirations and leverage your strengths.

When you sit down to write your goals in the essays, explain:
How did the goals develop?
How well are your goals connected with your professional
background and personal strengths and abilities?
How have you assessed suitability for the required career?
Show understanding of the career you wish to get into.

CAREER PROGRESS

You would share your career progression through an essay. Some schools have an essay that asks for it. Or you would share it through the way you describe your work experience through the application form and the resume.

In whichever way you share your career progress, remember that your objective is to demonstrate how your past experiences qualify you to seek the career you now desire, which you will share through the career goals essay. Your past is looked at keenly since it adds credibility to claims you make about the future you seek.

Start by thinking about all the career-related decisions you’ve made till now.

You laid the foundations of your career when you chose your undergraduate specialization. Think about what motivated you then.

You learned new skills and your first degree qualified you either to get a job or continue further studies. What motivated you then?

What were your career plans when you took up your first job? How have they changed over the years?

While on your job, did you discover any new aspects of your personality or work style?

List the areas in which you excelled and all the new skills you developed.

Consider all the job changes and reflect on the reasons that made you want to change. What did you gain or lose in the process?

Think of all the new assignments you undertook and how you handled them. How did you feel about changing your style of working to suit the demands of the new assignment? Were you comfortable? Did you falter? What did you learn from each experience of success or failure?

Get the most significant answers from the above questions into your essays, application form or resume and strengthen your case for admission. All the Best

Parents know best as far as careers are concerned Essay

Parents know best as far as careers are concerned Essay.

Before I give my point of view, let me define career as a sequence of occupations, jobs, and position engaged in or occupied throughout the lifetime of a person. Career is much more that having a job or earning a living. It is a series of roles played by a person. In a career you can feel that your abilities are being properly used, that the work is worth doing, that it is interesting. It is necessary that a person must make his or her own career choice so that one can choose what matches with their ability, their values and interests in life.

However, talking of parents making career choice for their children is not totally unacceptable. Thus, I’m in the neutral stance. First of all, my question to all who agree that children should choose their career, are you more experienced than your parents? We choose our career when we are about 17 years old. So do you think that you have explored more life than your parents? They come across hurdles and are now successful so they know how people are and have the recipe to be successful.

In addition, don’t you want to see them happy?

They give away every joy of their life and save money for us and we can’t just listen to their just a single demand. Besides, most parents feel that they have a right to get involved because they are paying for their children’s education. It is difficult to argue against this. It seems unreasonable not to allow parents to at least voice their preferences. Whether or not the children agree with them is another matter. However, parents do not have the right to force their children to do what they do not want to do. Many parents, for example, want their children to be doctors or engineers just to impress their friends and relatives. They forget that young people are capable of making wise decisions too. On top of that, many parents also feel that they know their children better than the children know themselves. Children can be impulsive and may make wrong decisions. There are also some parents who want to control their children’s lives.

They feel they must have a say in every decision their children make. These parents have already made up their minds what they want their children to be, regardless of their talents and interests. In this case, it is disastrous to choose for a child what he does not have the ability to do just because it carries a big name. For example a certain man chose that his son should be a medical doctor and paid his way into the university for his son to read Medicine, but it ended in disappointment. After some years of wasted efforts and money, the boy dropped the course for inability and lack of interest to continue. If the man had allowed his son choose a career that match his ability, value and interest, such a waste of effort, time and money would have been avoided.

However, after the father dumped him for a failure, on his own he changed to an area of his interest and ability by enrolling in an Accountancy programme. His story changed from failure to success at school and upon graduation he secured an Accounts job in one establishment and later moved into a big company. He is among the big names in Accountancy in our country. Is it not true that a big name in Accountancy like Akintola Williams, the Nigerian Renowned Chattered Accountant could have been unknown in Nigeria and the world if his parents had chosen that he study Medicine in order to hang the name doctor. It is wrong to call your child a failure in a course or direction he or she has no interest nor the ability to pursue but due to parents’ choice of a career for that child. Therefore, it is right for children to make their own career choice.

In my opinion, young people should seek the advice of their parents and teachers but at the same time not betraying their own interests and talents when choosing their careers. Some careers may appear glamorous, for example, singing or modeling, but the prospects may not be good. However, I feel, in most cases, a person has to make up his own mind after talking to a number of people, including his parents. It is wrong to totally disregard the opinions of our parents. On the other hand, it is wrong to choose a career just to please them. Parents should not try to live their lives through their children.

Parents’ stand

My question to all who agree that children should choose their career, are you more experienced than your parents? We choose our career when we are in 10th or 12th. So do you think that you have explored more life than your parents? they come across hurdles and are now successful so they know how people are and have the recipe to be successful. Don’t you want to see them happy? They give away every joy of their life and save money for us and we can’t just listen to their just a single demand. Its a shame, don’t be so selfish.

Children’s stand

The moderator, panel of judges, time keeper, distinguished audience, my co- debaters, time keeper, ladies and gentlemen. My name is… I am here to propose the motion that children should make their own career choice. Let me define career as a sequence of occupations, jobs, and position engaged in or occupied throughout the lifetime of a person. Career is much more that having a job or earning a living. Considerations When Choosing A Career Essay

Considerations When Choosing A Career Essay.

A few people are given an inner conviction that they must follow a certain occupation, irrespective of money, status or obligation to family. This applies to clergy, sometimes to doctors and nurses, and occasionally to teachers and social workers. So choosing a career includes many factors such as: capabilities, qualifications, personal problems and career goals. Most people choose a career taking into account these factors carefully.

First, we refer to capabilities which are developed in college. To some, science comes easier than the arts, or vice versa.

Given a particular bent, the wise course is to consult a career counselor, who will not only outline job opportunities but also discuss the student’s potential. Any worthwhile career demands academic qualifications which are only obtained by successfully completing a course of higher education. This may be lengthy. To become a lawyer involves five years of training, a doctor, seven. This raises the question of tuition and maintenance fees. In many countries, success in examinations may lead to scholarships which may offset some of the expenses.

In light of this, the student must be fairly certain of completing the training from the outset.

Next, it is one thing to qualify for a job, another to get one. Therefore a realistic look at job opportunities at home is essential. Some students decide to qualify and then go overseas, either to get a job or to obtain a higher qualification, which will give them better openings back home. An essential thing for working or studying in a foreign country is a good, preferably colloquial, knowledge of the language. Another is to have friends or contacts in that country, and to be certain that one can face a high cost of living. The third, perhaps the most important, is the need for a work permit. Various schemes exist to help students and qualified people in this way, although the world recession has not made finding a position easy.

Any career envisaged is certain to raise personal problems. The first is to what extent the young person should feel committed to his or her home. There may be a family business or farm owned and run for many generations by the same family. Has a son or daughter the right to break the generation sequence? In Africa, many students are financed for overseas training by the extended family. The family expects them to return so that they may reap the benefits, admittedly financial in many cases, of their training. The same may apply to the acceptance of grants. To be successful in a career means that you must feel happy and fulfilled in carrying it out, that you must not be a ‘nine to five’ worker, and that your partner must accept its disadvantages. It pays to study the lifestyle of a person and the attitudes of a person who is already advanced in the career you are considering.

Finally, to be happy depends on the goals of the question, “What am I looking for?” If it is just money, keep out of the academic professions, however able you may be. Stick to business or commerce. If it is money, status and power, then go into upper management or political career. If you love people, then go into one of the social careers such as teaching or the Peace Corp. Any good job may mean leaving your area and environment, possibly to a large or capital city. Are you prepared to travel, move houses, be separated from your friends and stand alone ? What is even more important, is your wife or husband prepared to accept these conditions? We are, in fact, defining our priorities when choosing our career. Before finding a job, we must consider what kind of job we want and qualify ourselves. Moreover, our decisions are influenced by our inner convictions, capabilities and expectations of family. All of these factors play a role in directing our lives.
