Different Levels of Basketball Essay

Different Levels of Basketball Essay.

I did my research paper on the difference between high school, college, and professional basketball. My senior project was on a 3rd-6th grade basketball camp. The reason I did my paper on the differences is because it relates to how the different age and ability levels affect the outlook of the sport. As an individual transitions from high school to college and then to a professional level, one may come to realize major and subtle differences in each level that is experienced.

James Naismith invented the game of basketball as something to keep men occupied. It has changed a lot from then to now.

It was first played with a peach basket with no hole in the bottom. There were no backboards. There was no 10-second line, three-second violation, and no frontcourt and backcourt lines. But the greatest difference between Naismith’s invention and basketball as we know it today was that in the thirteen rules, there were no provisions for dribbling.

He said the game could be played with as few as three or as many as forty players on the court at the same time. Naismith didn’t want a soccer or lacrosse goal because indoors, nine men would line up in front of the goal and it would be impossible to score, so the goal had to be elevated.

The 10-foot height on the baskets came about because the first peach baskets were attached to the edge of an elevated running track that happened to be 10 feet. And for 108 years, as players have grown to seven feet tall and beyond, the height has not changed. On a high school level it differs from college and professional because, in high school you have a drive and inspiration to do it. High school athletes do it because they like the game and its fun. Some kids look at it as an opportunity to do something with their life.

Basketball wasn’t made for how it is now. High school basketball should be fun but coaches’ have changed it into seriousness and hard work. High school basketball players look up to college and professional players as role models. Role models to them give them a drive to play the game also, wanting to be like someone can give you all the inspiration in the world. Basketball in high school can make you a better person, gives you work ethic, and it can change your mind on bad decisions. Mostly understanding the game can make you a better player.

The love of the game when you’re in high school can also make you want to pursue a career in the sport. The benefits of the game have changed a lot. If your grades aren’t up to par but you’re a great basketball player coaches will help you, even college coaches will do all they can to get you to come to their school. Prep schools are meant to prepare kids for Ivy League colleges but players use them for athletic purposes. Public school seniors who aren’t getting looked at by division 1 schools go to prep schools for a 5th year in high school.

This will give the player more exposure and a chance to get better, stronger, and increase there game. The trend of basketball-centered schools gained momentum when Tracy McGraddy (an NBA all-star) jumped from Mt. Zion Christian Academy, a prep school, to the NBA. Students who come from top of their high school class may be shocked to realize that their college classmates have the same academic and athletic ability. College is way different from high school. In a school were you might have been the best, now you’re going to college were there are many people around just as good and better.

That is a huge change, the practices are so much harder, they won’t take it easy on you, there paying for your tuition so you have to earn it. The magnitude of college is different from high school because, you’re playing in a gym with maybe 10,000 people watching you. You’re on television now playing the sport you love, with tons of pressure on you. You will go up against some of the best college athletes in the game. College basketball is moving at a faster pace then high school, which is why they work you so hard to get faster, stronger, and to develop more technical skills.

Now you’re living on a campus full of distractions, wanting to go to parties but there’s practice in the morning, or having to split time with school work and practice. You really have to be dedicated to the sport to play in college. Now this is the time were you have to be focused on the game. This is the working out, eating the right meals, no drinking, and getting to sleep at a decent hour. You may not have had to do this in high school but for your health it should be a requirement if you plan on going far.

In college you really have to perfect your game, it’s not about fun anymore it’s about competition, going head to head against your opponent, and pursuing a career in the game. Since you have to be a certain age to enter the NBA draft, kids are going to college for a year then making the jump to the NBA. Athletes are taking this very seriously; as if they need to win, need to be the best, this is were making the game a profession comes in. They don’t want to let there family and friends down. One of the biggest events a college basketball player would like to take there team is to the NCAA tournament.

The Final Four and the Championship game are the two biggest events in the NCAA. So if a player and his teammates can make it there, NBA scouts will be looking at them. The NBA is one of the biggest jumps you could make in your career of basketball. If you can make it to the NBA you are considered a great player. Even if you didn’t get off the bench, you made it to the NBA. There are nearly 550, 000 basketball players, about 50 make it to the NBA. So if you are one of those 50 you’re considered a great player. Now you’re entering a business.

NBA players are getting paid up to 10 million dollars a year. That is the biggest difference from high school and college. You’re considered a role model now, kids look up to you. You have in image to uphold, if you do something wrong and are on the news, your image is ruined. The NBA had the greatest basketball players of all time, Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Earvin “Magic” Johnson and others still playing. Those are players you have to look up to try and be like them, even though you’re in the NBA that doesn’t make you the greatest.

The NBA is entertainment; people watch it because it entertains them. Fans pay a lot of money on NBA players yearly. Buying there jerseys, paying for tickets, and betting on games. The most obvious distinction between the NBA and the NCAA is the number of teams. The NBA is made up of just 29 teams were as college is made up of 200 teams. The NBA plays an 82-game schedule. Playing more games against fewer teams creates a dull sense of sameness for most NBA teams, thus while college teams rarely lack enthusiasm or motivation.

Usually college teams play only twice a week, so fatigue rarely is a factor. But NBA teams may play as often as four or five games in a week. Talent or lack or it also plays a role in the difference between the NBA and college basketball. Even the worst team in the NBA occasionally can beat the best team in the league. This is why each level is different. As an individual transitions from high school to college and then to a professional level one may come to realize major and subtle differences in each level of basketball that is experienced.

The history of basketball Essay

Basketball is the most popular indoor sport in the world. It is also one of the few sports whose year of birth and originator can be traced back to 100% correctly, a man by the name of Dr. James A. Naismith in the year of 1891. Even though the game was started and grew in the United States, it is now played and watched in more than 150 countries.

When Dr. Naismith invented the game basketball, he was a physical education teacher at the International Training School of the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) in Spring Field, Massachusetts.

It was winter, and his students needed a fast-paced game that could be played indoors. After a lot of thinking he finally decided of a game where players would be throwing a ball into baskets. So he attached a couple of old wooden peach baskets to the end of each gym balcony and brought up some basic rules.

Even though the game was fun to play, there were some problems that they had to solve, for example: when the players would throw the ball into the basket.

They would have to get a ladder to climb up just to bring it back down. So they decided to cut holes in the bottom of the basket for the balls to fall out, which also helped them play faster. Peach baskets were used until 1906 when they were finally replaced with metal hoops and backboards.

The game of basketball consists of two teams, with five players each. On each end of the basketball court is a round metal rim/hoop placed ten feet above the floor. The object of the game is to score points by shooting a large ball through the basket. Also while preventing the other team from scoring points. The team with the highest amount of points at the end of the game wins.

Then there is the coach who organizes the basketball team and instructs the players with important skills and holds important sessions to drill the team and prepare for each game. The coach also designs plays and strategies to use against opposing teams. Then during the game the coach chooses which players to use and tells them what to do and also decides when to call “time out”. They usually have one assistant coach, mostly in colleges or on a professional team.

Basketball is a fast paced, exciting game to most people. Most of this appeal lies between the intensity of teamwork and the individual athletic skills. As time passed, Dr Naismith became known as “the father of basketball” and more and more people heard of his game. Basketball began to spread across the U.S. then manifested throughout the rest of the world.

Basketball became world renowned for its professional organized games which later in history was broadcasted on radio, television and newspaper. In present day the popular basketball organization goes by the name of the “NBA” which stands for “National Basketball Association” made up of many different teams that represent different cities in the United States. This game is also now played by women in the present day and is called the “WNBA” which stands for “Women’s National Basketball Association”. Basketball is a sport that can often be found in the suburbs but mostly in the urban communities. The sport gradually evolved from tossing balls in a fruit basket, to a full court two sided arena played sport that many enjoy the excitement of playing or watching.

“Hoops” by Walter Dean Myers Essay

“Hoops” by Walter Dean Myers Essay.

The story I read and am writing my essay on is the book Hoops by Walter Dean Myers. The reason why I am writing this essay is because I like this is a great book. The book is about a seventeen year old boy named Lonnie, faces a difficult life with the harsh nagging of his mom and trying to become pro at basketball. Later on in this book Lonnie faces a really difficult decision if he wants to throw the game or if he wants to beat the opposing team.

This is a great book because it teaches about friendship and trust. It also is good because it is exciting to read what decisions the character will make and what will happen after he makes it. This book teaches us how hard it is to live in poor places and other really important things.

The way that this book teaches us friendship and trust is because, Lonnie has to trust his friends and his teammates that they will stick up for him when he is in hard times.

Many times in this book has Lonnie’s friends stuck up for him and Lonnie trusted his friends a lot to keep his secrets from others. There was one time in the book where Lonnie’s girlfriend had to keep a secret about their coach named Cal, about him being a pro basketball player.

There are many times when Lonnie had to make hard decision. It is exciting to see what decision he makes and what happens after. There was one time when Lonnie had to make a decision and his decision was to go into the locker room and help his coach beat up some guys. After a lot of fighting Cal his coach got stabbed and died shortly after. I think that everything in this book and every adventure that Lonnie goes on is very exciting. Lonnie to me is a tough, courageous, and loyal. And he demonstrates all these throughout the story.

In this story Lonnie and his friends live in the ghetto. This book teaches us that the ghetto is a hard place to live in because there are a lot of people getting hurt and stores getting robbed. There was one part in the book that had a store being robbed and everybody in the neighbour hood went to the truck that had delivery things in it and stole a lot of stuff that were in it.

Lonnie is a great guy with many friends and he lives in the harsh ghetto, which makes this novel a great one. When you read this book you will not regret it. So concluding my essay I would suggest that you read this book because it is a great book that will get you excited. So I suggest you pick this book up and read it. When are you going to pick up the book?

Basketball: Then vs. Now Essay

Basketball: Then vs. Now Essay.

The sport of basketball was invented 113 years ago. The first original 13 rules of basketball are much different than the rules today. Not only have the rules evolved, but also the number of players, regulation time, and mainly just the dynamics of the game altogether. After explanation, you will be able to see how many changes basketball has truly undergone to become what it is now.

The original 13 rules of basketball written by James Naismith are as follows:

1. The ball may be thrown in any direction with one or both hands.

2. The ball may be batted in any direction with one or both hands (never with the fist).

3. A player cannot run with the ball. The player must throw it from the spot on which he catches it, allowance to be made for a man who catches the ball when running at a good speed if he tries to stop.

4. The ball must be held in or between the hands; the arms or body must not be used for holding it.

5. No shouldering, holding, pushing, tripping, or striking in any way the person of an opponent shall be allowed; the first infringement of this rule by any player shall count as a foul, the second shall disqualify him until the next goal is made, or, if there was evident intent to injure the person, for the whole of the game, no substitute allowed.

6. A foul is striking at the ball with the fist, violation of Rules 3,4, and such as described in Rule 5.

7. If either side makes three consecutive fouls, it shall count a goal for the opponents (consecutive means without the opponents in the mean time making a foul).

8. A goal shall be made when the ball is thrown or batted from the grounds into the basket and stays there, providing those defending the goal do not touch or disturb the goal. If the ball rests on the edges, and the opponent moves the basket, it shall count as a goal.

9. When the ball goes out of bounds, it shall be thrown into the field of play by the person first touching it. In case of a dispute, the umpire shall throw it straight into the field. The thrower-in is allowed five seconds; if he holds it longer, it shall go to the opponent. If any side persists in delaying the game, the umpire shall call a foul on that side.

10. The umpire shall be judge of the men and shall note the fouls and notify the referee when three consecutive fouls have been made. He shall have power to disqualify men according to Rule 5.

11. The referee shall be judge of the ball and shall decide when the ball is in play, in bounds, to which side it belongs, and shall keep the time. He shall decide when a goal has been made, and keep account of the goals with any other duties that are usually performed by a referee.

12. The time shall be two 15-minute halves, with five minutes’ rest between.

13. The side making the most goals in that time shall be declared the winner. In case of a draw, the game may, by agreement of the captains, be continued until another goal is made.

Of course, if you have any common knowledge of how basketball is played, you know very well that today’s play is much different. Many of these rules have changed, including the dribble. Dribbling was created as an escape from the defense. Players could also run down the court tapping the ball in the air without it touching the floor, or could dribble the ball using both hands. Now days, you cannot move with the ball unless you are using a one handed dribble. Until 1916, a player could not shoot after dribbling. He had to pass the ball.

Scoring has also changed much since then. In the beginning, field goals counted for one point, and a player who fouled was sent to a penalty box, as in hockey. If a team fouled three consecutive times, the opponent got a field goal. This rule was eventually replaced by free throws. By 1895, field goals were worth two points and free throws one. For many years, each team had one player who shot all the free throws. That rule was changed in 1910 by a New York league that required who was fouled to shoot the free throw. This rule still holds today.

There are also boundary lines on the basketball court marking in and out of bounds. Before the creation of those, when a ball went anywhere on the court, the team that got to the ball first gained possession. This caused teams to go crashing into the spectators, walls, and hallways. Today, we have out of bounds and whichever team caused the ball to go out of bounds, the opponents gain possession with a throw-in.

Other changes such as uniform colors, dunking rules, regulations on backboards, time-outs, overtime, fouling out, backcourt rules, free throws, and three pointers were also engaged in change, some over and over again until they became what they are today.

There was much controversy about the three pointer. It was invented for a catch up method when a team was behind. Indeed, this did work, and in 1980, Western Carolina’s Ronnie Carr drilled a three-point field goal, the first in the history of basketball. Few rules have ever impacted the game of basketball as the introduction of the three pointer. College coaches and many other personnel were interested with the three and there was never any talk of getting rid of it. Not only was it a great offensive weapon for teams, it was also very exciting, resulting in higher ticket sales, and it required more skill than the older popular attraction, the dunk.

Basketball is a great American sport, and perhaps one that requires the most skill along with a great mental game. Personally, it is one of my favorites, and it is amazing how it has evolved from 1891 to 2004.
