John Green is the New York Times best-selling author of Looking for Alaska, An Abundance of Katherines, Paper Towns, and The Fault in Our Stars. John Green has written some very unique pieces of literature, such as; This Is Not Tom, which is written completely in riddles. He also wrote a long short story called Let It Snow. John Green has done several radio interviews and he has done several interviews with young fans of his. John Green is a very popular and talented author; reaching the hearts of many teenage boys and girls because his novels relate to all of the issues that teens go through.

In the novel The Fault in Our Stars written by John Green, the main character and narrator of the story, Hazel Grace, is cancer ridden and is terminally ill. Hazel is like any typical 16 year old girl; constantly thinking and worrying about love, boys, and lust. Hazel attends a support group that is necessary to help her fight the cancer that has taken over her body, according to her parents.

At support group she meets this charming, handsome, irresistible boy whose name is Augustus Waters. Augustus had cancer and is attending the support group because his friend Isaac, who has cancer of the eye, made him go.

Augustus takes Hazel to his house to watch a movie and Hazel begins to fall for him immediately. Augusts begins to fall for Hazel, too. Coping with illness and death is a difficult issue for anybody but it is particularly harder for teenagers to cope with. John Green focuses on the complex issues of life, death, and love in teenage boys and girls. Coping with illness and death is a difficult issue for anyone but particularly with teenagers. In Chapter six, Hazel says, “I’m like. Like. I’m like a grenade, Mom. I’m a grenade and at some point I’m going to blow up and I would like to minimize the casualties, okay?” Hazel feels like she is a grenade because she is terminally ill so she does not want to hurt anyone, especially Augustus and her parents. Hazel ends up in the hospital because her lungs were filled with fluid again and she could not breathe, compliments of the cancer, and she began to wonder if Augustus would really be okay if she died.

She wanted so badly to not be a grenade and a malevolent force in the lives of the people that she loved. Hazel wanted not to love Gus and did not want to fall for him, but it was too late. So, she gives up that thought and wants to be with Gus because he wants to be with her. The novel touches on subjects that most teenagers relate to or have dealt with, such as: love, life, illness, and eventually death. Teenagers deal with some serious turning points in their lives that will have an impact on them until the day they die. First loves, deaths, life itself impacts every teenager. Coping with illness and death is a difficult issue among Hazel and Gus. While Gus and Hazel are in Amsterdam, Gus starts to feel the cancer creeping up on him; getting ready to snatch him from Hazel’s arms. Hazel begins to realize why she never wanted to love anybody or have anybody love her. She is a grenade and Gus is a grenade. Hazel uses this to describe herself because she is going to die, and it is inevitable. When she does die, she will hurt everyone that she has ever known in many ways.

Hazel is so afraid of being hurt and taking risks and she does not want Augustus to be her grenade. Hazel realizes that Augustus’s death is inevitable. As Gus’s condition worsens and he starts to deteriorate, all of his friends and his loved ones begin struggling to cope with the reality that he is going to pass away fairly soon. Augustus tries very hard to be strong for Hazel all throughout the novel. Gus supports her and shows that he really does care about her. In Chapter four, Augustus explains to Hazel and his friend Isaac, “That’s the thing about pain… it demands to be felt.” Gus tries to convince Isaac, who had just lost both his eyes due to cancer and Hazel who was just in the hospital, that pain needs attention. Pain can never be ignored, it will always be felt, and everyone dealing with pain just has to know how to make it into something positive. In Chapter two, Augustus and Hazel are talking and he says to her, “Don’t tell me you’re one of those people who becomes their disease. I know so many people like that. It’s disheartening… But surely you haven’t let it succeed prematurely.”

Gus shows that he is strong and shows that he can make the best of the time that he has left to live. He does not want to become like most people, suffering, laying around, and letting their disease prohibit the activities they could be participating in. After Augustus asks Hazel if she has become her disease, she realizes that she has let her disease control her. After Hazel comes to this realization, she begins to get out of the house more and enjoy life. Coping with death is a very touchy and sensitive subject among teenagers. Death is very hard to cope with for anyone, no matter how old. Everyone deals with death in some point in their lives. With the coming of death, comes the realization that in everybody’s life, there will be that one grenade. Poor Augustus had already had one grenade blow up. His ex-girlfriend, Caroline, died of cancer in her brain, and he was hurt beyond repair. Gus stayed with Caroline until the very end and he had wanted to be able to support Hazel when she was in need. Gus learned to take his suffering and turn it into something positive. Gus learned how to take death and turn it into inspiration.

For me, I would never be able to have a positive outlook on death. Death is the hardest thing to cope with. Losing somebody you care about is the hardest thing I have ever had to go through. Hazel feels the same way. Losing Gus turns her into a mess and I believe when Gus passed away, her condition started to deteriorate. Hazel did not have her sunshine anymore. Gus gave her hope and when they were together, infinite happiness. Gus realizes that he is going to die soon and organizes a pre-funeral so he can hear Isaac and Hazel’s eulogies’ for him. Both Isaac and Hazel are very upset while they are reading their eulogies.

Hazel pours her heart out and describes her love for Gus and how unique he is and how wonderful and how much of an honor it was to love him. When Gus dies, at his funeral, Hazel tailors her eulogy because Gus is no longer suffering and can hear nothing she says. What she said to him was for him and only him to hear. Hazel did not want to make Augustus’s parents suffer any more than they already were. Death, although inevitable, has a positive impact on some aspects of life. Many people realize things about themselves they never would have if the one they loved never passed away. Death is a good thing; it keeps equilibrium in the human mind and physically on Earth.

Love is ultimately complicated by illness and death. To be in love is every teenage girls dream. To be in love with a guy like Augustus Waters, any girl would kill for. While reading the novel I fell in love with Gus because of how sweet and charming he was. Gus’s personality was so similar to a guy that I fell for. I could relate to Hazel. While I was reading, sometimes I felt like I was narrating my own story. Hazel fell in love with him because he was sweet, charming, funny, and he understood her. John Green creates the perfect characters for teenagers to relate to on the topic of love. Augustus will do anything to get Hazel’s attention and he will do anything to make her happy. Augustus shows his love for Hazel in many ways. For example, Hazel shares her favorite book with him called An Imperial Affliction and Gus went through the trouble of reading it and finding the deranged author of the book so Hazel could have all of her unanswered questions answered. Gus uses his wish in order to fly Hazel and him to Amsterdam to meet the author of the novel. While they are in Amsterdam, Hazel and Augustus fall deeper in love.

Gus is hiding something crucial in their relationship from Hazel. Gus had just gotten more X-rays done before the Amsterdam trip and the results showed that his cancer had come back. His cancer spread all throughout his body and there was absolutely no possible way to cure it or prolong his life. Hazel thought she was going to die far before Gus would. This news took her by surprise and made her realize she would be in existence without the love of her life fairly soon. This news made Hazel’s love for Gus grow even more because now the time spent together between the two of them was cut short. Teenage love is a confusing subject. So many mixed emotions are associated with loving somebody. In this novel, death is associated with love, unfortunately. In the end, Augustus Waters and Hazel Grace had a love that was “bigger than other infinities” (259). Hazel loved Gus until the end of her “infinity.” Some loves are better than others and their love was like no other.

Hazel and Gus had a bond that nobody would understand; just as it should be, only the two lovers understanding each other, completely. In Chapter twenty, Hazel is reading Gus his eulogy she wrote for only his ears. Hazel says, “But, Gus, my love, I cannot tell you how thankful I am for our little infinity. I wouldn’t trade it for the world. You gave me a forever within the numbered days, and I’m grateful.” Hazel begins to cry after reading Gus’s eulogy. Love is a confusing subject. Illness and death are inevitable and more difficult to cope with when losing a loved one, as Hazel discovers. The title of the novel comes from a quote from Shakespeare in Act 1, scene two, Cassius says, “The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, But in ourselves, that we are underlings;“ meaning that it is not fate that will doom somebody.

The person has doomed themselves. John Green does not agree. In his novel, he shows that it is not the person’s fault sometimes. All bad things cannot be avoided. Some fates are easier to avoid than others, but death, is not one of those. Death is inevitable. Hazel and Augustus never did anything wrong to deserve the fate they got handed to them. They could not avoid it or change it. Gus and Hazel found a way to love still, despite their faults. Death and life itself could not change the way Gus and Hazel felt about each other. Neither death nor illness could ever take away the joy Hazel and Gus felt from being in each other’s presence.

In the beginning McDonalld’s was considered as a Family restaurant. Then they started positioning according to the kids as well by introducing new advertising of toys with their products such as “Happy Meal”. In the start they made certain special efforts to not allow it to convert into a teenage and adults (20 to 24 years of age) hangout place. Now youngster and adults has became so use to fast foods that McDonalds should also target them and try to position McDonalds as a place for all.

They should target adults also because they can pay for quality and variety of products.

McDonalds offers different products like Happy Meal which includes a free toy for kids. For families it has made different outlets and meals which are suitable for takeaways and drive-thru. McDonalds has made its environment which is suitable for students of school to hang out with their friends and can get their lunch at McDonalds.

Perhaps the most obvious marketing for McDonald’s is its’ marketing towards children and the parents of young children. Ronald McDonald was first introduced in 1963 and marked the beginning of their focus on young children as a critical part of their ongoing business. Parents like to visit McDonald’s because it is a treat for the kids, and the kids enjoy the cartoon like atmosphere. Why do most kids enjoy McDonalds? A trip to McDonalds is in and of itself an adventure. There is the “fun center”, toys, food and the playground. Kids are lured into the restaurant because of the amenities. One perfect example of this are the happy meal toys.  Children will rip open their happy meal to play with the cheap toy, often times forgetting about the food that comes with it. The frenzy even reached adults with the introduction of the Beanie Babies.

The key is to introduce a catch, or a reason for coming. A hamburger can be made at home, but the toy can’t. The experience is what sells to children. McDonalds carefully separates its advertising campaign to target both young and older audiences. When dealing with the older audience McDonalds focuses on the cheap and quick nature of the food. They have even introduced food that give the impression of being healthy (the McGrill for example).

McDonald’s also targets business customers as a part of their core business. Business customers may stop during the workday and can count on fast service, and consistently good food. Another major target of McDonald’s marketing is to teens. Teens find the value menu especially appealing and McDonald’s markets their restaurants as a cool place to meet with their friends and hang out. Short customer profile:

A parent with two children Visits McDonald’s to give the children a treat. Children want to visit McDonald’s as it is a fun place to eat. A business customer Visits McDonald’s during the day as service is quick, the food tastes great and can be eaten in the car without affecting a busy work schedule. This can lead to people talking behind your back at school and not having any friends that want to talk to you. Furthermore, teenagers having a cellphone can stop them from going out as much. The advantage of going out with yours friends is to socialize and have fun. There would be no point to going out if you have a cellphone because you can just call each other or talk online.

These are a few examples of how having a cellphone can ruin a teenagers’ social life. As a teenager having a cellphone distracts me on a daily basis. For instance, when having a conversation with someone it makes it hard for me to concentrate to what the person in front of me is saying when an incoming message is sent. Also, having a cellphone beside you while doing your homework is not a great idea. While doing your homework you can randomly get a text message or a notification which makes it hard to focus on your work and easy to get distracted by your phone. So instead of doing your homework you will probably be playing a game on your phone. In addition to getting distracted while doing homework, teenagers also get distracted while doing their chores.

This can lead them to not getting their chores done and later on getting in trouble by their parents. In brief, being a teenager and having a cellphone distracts me in many ways and most likely distracts other teenagers as well. Finally, having a cellphone when you are a teenager lacks productivity. Teenagers sit somewhere for hours doing nothing that is important. For example, you go on your phone and check your Twitter, Tumblr, and Instagram over and over again. Also, teenagers get so attached to their phone that they forget about their homework and the next day try to come up with excuses on why it is not done. Teenagers should go outside and breathe the fresh air but when you are on your phone you manage to sit around for hours which is not very healthy for your body.

Working at McDonald’s is an article that emphasizes how irrelevant working in high school is on the scale of importance in life. Amitai Etzioni points out that teenagers are distracted by repetitive jobs when they should be focusing on their education. Etzioni makes his argument about teenage jobs undermining school attendance and involvement, imparting few skills that will be useful later on in life, and skewing the values of teenagers especially their ideas about the worth of a dollar. McDonald’s, in this case, provides “no room for initiative, creativity, or even elementary rearrangements” says Etzioni.

Etzioni introduces logos into the story right from the very beginning in paragraph two. “As many as two-thirds of America’s high school juniors and seniors now hold down part-time jobs”. This refers to the vast majority of teenagers who maintain a job while still going to school. In paragraph thirteen, logos is also relevant. The author states that “24 percent of the seniors at one high school in 1985 worked as much as five to seven days a week; 27 percent, three to five.

” Although these percentages aren’t relatively high, the author claims that there is no way a teenager’s work won’t interfere with schoolwork. In addition to this factual information, the author is simply stating that there is no room for personal development if teenagers are only doing repetitive tasks.

As well as logos, ethos can be applied to Working at McDonald’s. Ethos is the strongest appeal in this story because Etzioni backs up all his claims with credible sources. In paragraph ten, the author states that “A 1980 study by A. V. Harrell and P. W. Wirtz found that, among those students who worked at least 25 hours per week while in school, their unemployment rate four years later was half of that of seniors who did not work”. Despite the work experience, Etzioni makes a point that these part time jobs “provide no career ladders, few marketable skills, and undermine school attendance and involvement.”

The argument in Working at McDonald’s was clear, and for a minute, the author persuaded me to take his side because of the logical reason and facts that are brought up throughout the text. Even though the story focuses more on logos and Ethos as opposed to pathos, I felt a sense of emotion because I know what it’s like to work a part time job (even two for that matter) while still in high school. The author brings up the point that no one really knows where all this hard-earned money goes to (in paragraph 18); “Some use it to support themselves, especially among the poor. More middle-class kids set some money aside to help pay for college, or save it for a major purchase-often a car.”

I can relate to that statement because my reasons for working during school were to save money to put myself through college, gain a sense of independency, as well as save up for big purchases (such as a car). Ultimately, after initially being persuaded by the author, I realize that I completely disagree with him because working two jobs and maintaining good grades in school taught me a lot of valuable skills. I learned great time management skills, how to be more responsible, communication skills, and problem solving. I would’ve never learned any of those skills had I not worked in high school no matter how mundane the job may have been. Despite my disagreements, the story was filled with great representations of ethos, and logos through logical and credible statements.

The concept of adolescence was presented near the end of the nineteenth century and characteristics were attributed to male youths where the adolescents were depicted as “passive and vulnerable”. This label, or stereotype, has greatly changed. Nowadays, young boys face varying forms of stereotypes that lead to judgments that were unimaginable in the past century. The mass media has greatly influenced these stereotypes, so it has contributed to creating an increasingly judgmental society, which forces young boys to adapt in order to fit the accepted norm.

It is no mystery that society has become increasingly judgmental. In the words of the teen singer and actress, Ariana Grande, “Sometimes, people can be extraordinarily judgmental and closed-minded to anyone different or special, which is why it’s so hard for young people in this day and age to be comfortable enough in their own skin to not listen to the people picking on them.” This is something that I, for one, have experienced first hand not only in the environment I am currently in, but also around the world.

People are highly judgmental and take seconds to form a prejudice about a person after a brief encounter. This is a fact that reflects how “broken” societal values truly are.

In order to judge a person, he who is judging must know many things in order to determine if he or she is “fit.” When it comes to children, these prejudices can truly affect their development. A clear example of this is Walker’s son in her essay “_Putting Down the Gun”._ This boy was a sweet kid who was not a gamer nor a jock. He felt out of place because of this and asked his mother if he should try to become either one in order to be attractive to girls. Stereotypes are shown to lead to judgment, since boys become prejudiced toward certain roles that they must adhere to in order to feel accepted that lead them to make unnatural changes and choices.

Understanding why society has become increasingly judgmental, leads to uncovering the underlying cause. Who would benefit most from these stereotypes that lead to prejudice? One element comes to mind: mass media. The mass media is the machine that conglomerates around the world wield in order to beat consumers into submission. In the case of Walker’s son, he was faced with two prefabricated consumer centered options. If he inclined towards gaming, he would spend thousands of dollars on consoles and games. Nevertheless, if the choice was becoming a jock, this would entail thousands of dollars of investment in equipment and lessons.

Furthermore, there are repeated instances where mass media is responsible for changing society’s view on men based on the promotion of certain consumer goods; such is the case of Paul Theroux’s “_Being a Man”_. In this essay, Theroux states how Marlboro managed to change society’s opinion of cigarettes. Before this mass media maneuver, cigarettes were thought of as a woman’s item. With the publicity that presented the picture of Clarence Hailey Young, Marlboro managed to convince the public that rugged men also smoked cigarettes. Instantly, the stereotype on cigarettes changed. Before Marlboro’s publicity, a man that smoked would have been considered feminine. After Clarence Hailey Young, cigarette smoking was viewed as a masculine and rugged habit.

On the whole, mass media is made up of internet, video games, music, television, newspapers, magazines, and other means of reaching large audiences. Social media, though technically not considered mass media by many experts, is a way of communicating with others on a global scale that has grown exponentially. Many would argue that mass media is not necessarily negative. Nevertheless, a study by Pediatric Child Health, performed over a decade ago, takes into consideration the positive and negative aspects of mass media.

Though not all television programs are harmful, this study shows that it has negative effects on youths such as exposure to violence, offensive language, and exposure to sexuality. It also involves health hazards such as an increase in obesity and hindering academic performance. On the other hand, video games promote coordination and finer motor skills, but may harm the learning process when the games are violent. Subsequently, internet is a source for learning and can be seen as a “huge home library”, but can be addictive and hinder social development. Printed media, though rich in useful information, is filled with ads that promote images that accentuate the stereotypes that adolescents consider must be adopted.

Hence, it is necessary to resolve the central issue of mass media´s effect on youth. In order to do so, governments, educational boards, companies, and parents, in general, must come together and agree on a successful course of action to protect youths from the influence of mass media on stereotypes and the artificial expectations it produces. Once way to combat the influence of mass media, is to instill values that allow youths to become unaffected by mass media strategies. As a result of upbringing and constant counseling by parents, youths can follow a different approach to mass media bombardment. For instance, around the age of 13 years old, which is the time when teenagers develop their sense of style and tastes, I decided that I would not follow the herd. I decided to do this because I did not desire to be part of the “sheep” and follow these off the edge of the cliff.

To me, conviction hailed that there was no point in doing the same thing as everybody else. In consequence, I decided to be unique, and, when it came to fashion, I would search for those items that I preferred and were uncommon to the masses. Seeking out singularity and establishing a sense of self is are traits that I have adhered to ever since. Certainly, this could be appealing to others; it has definitely been working out for me. Placing conviction over the stereotype is indeed a sure way to surpass judgment and avoid adapting to a norm or fad that does not agree with a youth’s personality. When certain of likes and dislikes, mass media has little to no effect on youths or individuals as a whole. Still, is this course of action feasible for all?

The success of any strategy to combat mass media’s effect on youths has much to do with the adolescent’s context, which encompasses family, culture, peers, and schools. Development occurs in this setting and it is greatly influenced by historical, economic, cultural, and social factors. The opportunities and support for development that adolescents receive greatly vary depending on the country they are in. Traditions are emphasized with greater force in Asian countries, while in the Middle East the contact between girl teens and boy teens is somewhat limited. Overall, adolescents are heterogeneous though technological advances the characteristics among youths are blending into a new culture. Despite all this, there are similarities and differences among adolescents worldwide. (Santrock 2008)

So, where is the key to deflecting the negative effects of mass media on youth? It may lie in valueflection. Adolescents uphold a system of values that they base their decisions on. These values have a hierarchy that the teen ponders upon to weigh which values are most essential or primordial than others. These values and their order change during a lifetime, but the moment in which an individual strives hardest to begin to form a sense of self is in the teen years, subsequently, mass media can greatly influence their value system during this time, as can family and peers. The media provides a frame through which the teen can see the world, and, unfortunately, it promotes egoistic society.

Teens see values in the media that they internalize and establish as important for success or what they consider happiness. However, the media promotes, but according to the teen’s needs it fulfills or does not fulfill those needs. Mediated valueflection presents the idea that with proper control variables, such as the influence or presence of a significant other, like a friend or family member that can help the teen clarify and truly evaluate his or her value system, the influence of mass media on them will not be significant. (Richards 2010)

Without any type of support for the adolescent, the media does what it has been doing: promote egotistical values based on acquisition of infinite material goods that promote a capitalist society. It will continue to isolate ideas and present a framework that reinforces the need to own tangible things as the uttermost value a teen will have. The key to minimizing the effect of mass media on youths may lie in focusing on their similarities and making a concerted effort to focus on values that promote assertiveness, uniqueness, and individuality.

In conclusion, the role of adolescents in society has been established since the beginning of the twentieth century. Even so, at the crucial moment in which a teen is truly developing a sense of self, conglomerates have used mass media with the sole purpose of instilling materialism and egoism as essential values for youths worldwide. The consequence has resulted in an overly judgmental society that centers on stereotypes that lead the youth to take on beliefs and attitudes that truly do not agree with them simply to try to adapt or fit in with the crowd.

The most efficient way to counteract this is to interact with the youth and contribute a framework opposed to the simplistic and empty values that are presented in the mass media on a regular basis. If the youth has a real frame of reference to fall back on and someone to talk to about the issues they are presented with through mass media, the effects of this publicity phenomena can be neutralized. It is imperative that parents, guardians, family, peers, and true friends teach adolescents to be independent and assertive so that the teens come to the understanding that no one can judge them for being themselves.

The novel A Bridge to Wisemans Cove is about a teenage boy named Carl who is mum left him and his brother to go live with their aunt, who is cruel, selfish and gambles. This book describes how Carl and his younger brother find happiness in the most odd places. In this novel, the author raised some issues like underage drinking, body image, child abuse, gambling, young school leavers and dysfunctional families.

Carls family was tearing apart from the start, from his mum occasionally leaving them to defend for themselves as beryl explains later on that mother of yours is always taking off.

to finding out that all the three children have different fathers. And Sarah their sister also leaves realizing that they could only make her life worse. The effects of Carls dysfunctional family are vast leaving kids feeling left out and alone, trapped in something that they dont like.

Child abuse was a relatively big thing in this book centring the affects that aunt Beryl has on both Harley and Carl, but mostly Harley.

She did not want Harley to leave the house. At one end it was looped in the window frame. At the other, met a pair of handcuffs. This is how she kept Harley at home by chaining him up. To where their mum abandons them because she cannot handle looking after them. Child abuse in this book is quite relevant for the teenage audience of this book.

Gambling is a significant issue in this book, showing from how it can be addictive to how it almost possesses a person. Aunt Beryl had a gambling problem she had a win at the poker machines. and played almost everyday, and how beryl steels from Carl to get the money to gamble with, leaving Carl with no money for himself or Harley. Gambling is an awful habit that in many cases is hard to escape from and has a big impact on not just one person but friends and family.

Body image was also brought up throughout the book. Describing how someone who is unhappy with themselves like Carl and Justine, Carls friend, can still have a good self image and feel good about themselves instead of hiding it. It also reflects on how Carl and Justine have something close, something to relate to with each other. stomach bulging through the lines of his buttons describes how Carl sees himself in the mirror. Body image is a major topic in any teenagers life and it is great to see that James moloney has relised that and brought it out as a message in his book.

Underage drinking is another topic in this novel describing how teenagers are not responsible with alcohol, but try to imagine that they are. Like Maddie (Justines friend) who became drunk on New Years by sculling a mix of rum and coke. It was Just rum and coke, like everyone else, but it didnt have the same effect to everyone else. Underage drinking is a problem that occurs in many teenagers lives and in some cases ruins their lives.

Leaving school early is what Carl had to do when he moved to Wisemans Cove after aunt beryls greedy mind took possession of Carls life and made him go get a job instead on going to school, because aunt beryl wanted the money to go gamble with. Harley on the other hand was able to go to school only so he was out of aunt beryls face for the day. Carl was forced to get a job on the barge with aunt beryl squeezing every dollar out of him. With Carl being fifteen years old it was hard for him to get a job but after helping joy (Maddies mum) he was able to help on the barge.

I didnt want to take you on.. Skip Duncan complained to Carl about not wanting to work with him. School is one of the essentials for a teenager and you cant just force one to loose the lack of education so easy. A Bridge to Wisemans Cove certainly raises the awareness of alcohol, child abuse, body image and how you feel about yourself, gambling, how families sometimes break up and how leaving school early can ruin some peoples life. I think that this book is great, making people relies that there are problems occurring out there that are usually hidden and un heard or until it is to late.

Adolescence is a critical period in human development. It is the period during which individuals undergo biological, psychological and social transformations, as they become adults. These transformations occur simultaneously and without conscious awareness by youth going through these changes. Any transformation an adolescent goes through may have an impact on the introduction and progression of teenage substance use. Substance abuse is drug abuse. Most substance abusers globally are the adolescents. This is because their developmental stage is vulnerable to anything.

The brain development of an adolescent is not fully developed.

A teenager may physically resemble an adult but still lack the brain maturation to think like one. To expect adolescents to make adult like decisions in regard to substance use is an unlikely expectation for most teenagers. Adolescence is defined as those behavioral changes that take place between childhood and maturity or adulthood. It is the changing period from childhood to adulthood. Adolescence is viewed as a time where biological, psychological and social transitions take place.

It is the most critical stage of human development. During adolescence, different behavior patterns become more frequent (Cobb, 2006). These behavioral trends include risk- taking behaviors, conflicts between the adolescence peers and parents and greater social development. Every individual adapts to their behavior depending on how they were brought up, their social interactions and adult influences. The physical development of adolescence is known as puberty. It is the stage a person is able to reproduce (Cobb, 2006). Adolescence Physical development is all about the body changes.

It involves genital growth, changes in body odor. Voice changes, growth of pubic hair, breast development and menstruation in female. The psychosocial development of adolescence is complicated. It involves hormones, love interests and intellectual pursuits. All this complicates adolescence development. In this development, stress, depression, lack of sleep, and anxiety are common among teenagers (Johnston et al, 2006). It is during this psychosocial development that adolescent teenagers are at risk of bad behavior. This development mostly involves

intellectual pursuits and social interactions. Adolescents’ brains are usually not fully developed. This plays a major role in immature emotional and cognitive development. It is during adolescence that teenagers adapt easily to different behaviors. How bad and well the behavior is depended on how an individual was brought up and the social interactions. Many risky behaviors such as substance abuse start at the adolescent stage of human development. Adolescence is also a time when young individuals take risks that can have a long time effects on their health and well being.

Substance abuse is the misuse of drugs. Most adolescents are prone to drugs and substance abuse. This is because the adolescent brains are not fully developed, and this plays a role in the decisions they make. Immature brain sections may place teenagers at prominent risk to the effects of drugs. Misuse of drugs or substance abuse is mostly associated with the adolescents. Globally, it is estimated through research that five billion people who abuse or use substances are the adolescent (Johnston et al, 2006). Adolescence is a period of significant personal development.

It is in this adolescent stage that teenagers are let to make their own decisions. They choose their friends and how they want to live their life. It is during this stage that they can adapt easily to certain behaviors due to influences. It is said that adolescence is the time of testing and novelty seeking. Curiosity on drugs is one way that makes young people abuse substances. Millions of young people try an illicit drug at least once during their adolescent years. The most common substance abuse among adolescents is alcohol and tobacco. Most of the teenagers will have tried either of the two or both.

It is estimated that twelve years is the average age of children to take their first alcoholic drink. Nearly 20 percent of twelve to twenty year old is considered to be binge drinkers (Cobb, 2006). Tobacco smoking is also prone to adolescents. Most smokers globally start at their teenage years hence become addicted. It is said that teens are more vulnerable to addiction and receptive to nicotine than are those who start to smoke as adults. Causes of adolescence substance use vary. Peer selection processes, peer influences and cognitive biases play a major role in adolescents substance use.

Parental influences also play a role in adolescence substance use. How the adolescent is raised and how the parents behave with them is important to their development. The parent teenage relationship plays major roles in adolescent substance use. Substance abuse has its effects to an individual. Adolescents who use substances frequently are at risk for healthy problems. Alcohol, tobacco and other drugs have certain effects that can cause mental and heath problems. Substance abuse adolescents are at a high risk for various issues that may disrupt with their development.

The physical, psychological and social effects of adolescent substance or drug abuse can have lasting consequences for the individual. This may interfere with a successful transition from adolescence to adulthood. On-going adolescent substance abuse can make an individual be at a greater risk for addiction in adulthood (Cobb, 2006). The physical consequences of adolescent substance abuse affect an individual physical development. Physical injuries and illnesses occur as a result of drug related accidents and overdoses. The psychological consequences of adolescent substance abuse affect an individual psychological development.

Psychological development is all about the brain. The Misuse and overdose of substances leads to mental health problems. Alcohol is one substance that affects an individual psychological development (Cobb, 2006). Tobacco misuse can lead to illnesses such as lung cancer. Other problems may also arise due to tobacco smoking. These illnesses caused by substance abuse can also lead to death. Prolonged substance abuse can cause depression an anxiety, which can disrupt an adolescent ability to function and develop in a productive manner. There are also social consequences due to adolescent substance abuse.

Adolescents who frequently abuse substances are more likely to have issues with their social development. Most of them tend to isolate themselves from family and friends. They are also more likely to have troubles with the law and law enforcers. Due to this, the adolescent substance abuser can bring problems within the family. Adolescence is a critical stage. Parents, teachers and any other adult should be role models for healthy behaviors. This is because adolescents adapt certain behavior from their peers and adults. Substance abuse affects adolescents mostly, and this can be avoided if the child to adolescent development is proper.

Substance abuse causes major risks to adolescence development. Due to this, it is important for adolescents to be taught good behavior and be corrected when they wrong. Acquiring an Identity and establishing self-esteem are two of the biggest obstacles that teenagers face. As children mature, they view themselves in more complicated ways. By the time they mature into teenagers they are able to give detailed psychological descriptions of themselves. Consequently, they become more interested in understanding their own personalities and why they behave the way they do. During the period of adolescence, feelings towards oneself change. Nonetheless, as individuals become more and more confident their self esteem increases.

Most teenagers go through periods when they are unsure of who they truly are. When they reach adulthood it is more likely that these young adults have a better sense of their real personality then someone who didn’t go through this struggle. This is mostly do to the fact that if you have this problem at some point you tend to study who you really are and in the end know yourself better. A child who is popular is much less likely to go through this issue.

As children get older and begin high school there is an increased importance of friends. As teenagers begin trusting and telling secrets to their friends, their relationship gains a sense of loyalty and obligation. When a teenagers finds him or herself thinking like a someone else it develops into a friendship.

If a strong bond occurs with someone normally of the opposite sex dating might occur. Dating is a very loose word which can mean many different things. It can mean going out in a group to have fun, going out in a group to get to know each other, or just two people going out to see a movie. After feelings have grown between two people they sometimes experiment sexually with each other.

Most teenagers’ first practice with sex does not involve another person. Many young adults have sexually related fantasies about someone they know (or someone they don’t know for that matter). It is also fairly common for adolescents to masturbate.

When many adolescents have reached high school, they have had some experience with intimate sexual contact, such as kissing, caressing, or sexual intercourse. In the 80’s it was common to become sexually active young, however now it seems as though that rate is slowing down. Judaism and many other religions look down on sexual activity or anything of that nature before marriage. Sexuality is only one of the main issues that high-schoolers face.

Another main concern in a teenager’s life is school. The school day and the school atmosphere is much more treacherous then it was in elementary school. When they were younger children very few classrooms and they were “taken care of” by one or two teachers. In high school, children tend to have a different teacher for each subject. This puts a huge strain on kids.Also, in elementary school, children work with their teachers all day. Once they are in Junior high they need to learn how to manage their time alone.

This can put a huge dent in people self esteem. Because they are so stresses their interest in other things may decline which only makes the situation worse. The only way to try to avoid this is to prepare ahead of time for it. That way you will expect it and be ready for the change.

Another huge problem that teenagers face is alcohol and drug abuse. Alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana are big issues in many schools. Adolescents tend to experiment to fit in with their friends. Teenagers may see smoking or drinking a gateway to popularity. There are many more reasons as to why children try drugs, alcohol, and cigarrettes, but that is one of the immense reasons Establishing a sexual identity is another huge concern in the eyes of teenagers. Sexual identity mainly means who you are attracted to (Same/Opposite sex). People whose own sex appeals to them are called homosexuals/lesbian. People who are attracted to the opposite sex are called heterosexual.

When most children enter high school they are spending most of their time with the same sex. An outcome to this would be that many adolescents begin to experience sexual feelings before they come close to anyone of the opposite sex. This only means that their sexual development is beyond their social development. This isn’t always an obstacle but it is something all maturing teenagers face.

Eating disorders is one of the most serious obstacles that teenagers face. Some adolescents, especially females, become so concerned about weight and their looks that they take drastic and dangerous measures to remain thin. The most common practice of this is causing yourself to throw up.This is called bulimia. Young women with a disorder called anorexia nervosa starve themselves to keep their weight low. These people view themselves as overweight when they are actually thin. Bulimia and anorexia nervosa are uncommon until one is a teenager and after one is 21.

Their are many issues that teenagers face and they all, in one way or another, effect that child’s self esteem. Almost every aspect of maturing for a teenager can cause stress. It is a very sensitive and important time for all human beings.Every year more and more is being done to prevent the stress we face but there is still much more work to be done.
