A revision of my Week One Discussion

During the week one discussions I stated that my aspirations as an advanced Human Services Professional is to create an impart to the vulnerable population. To embark on projects that will empower and break barriers of segregation for people with disabilities thereby improving their quality of life. My search for this week’s discussion was on peer-review articles about empowering the disable through career development. In the United States persons with disabilities are not a homogenous group (Artman & Daniels, 2010). They are diverse in culture, sex orientation, disability type, severity and functionality. All these factors have an influence on career development for persons with disabilities. This week discussion therefore reshapes my aspirations to focus on career development barriers, facilitators, self-determination, interventions and recommendations programs for persons with disabilities.

Process for Searching for Scholarly Articles (e.g., keywords used, databases accessed, advanced searches

I used the Walden library advanced search tool and Boolean with key words disability and empowerment. I used the EBSCO database to locate articles and then narrowed my search within the past five years (2018-2023) limiting my search to peer-reviewed articles and full text.

What challenges did you experience searching for scholarly articles?

I initially faced a lot of challenges with narrowing down my search key words that reflect my aspirations. Looks like I also had a whole lot of aspirations search word to select from. Then I went ahead to use the advanced tool which filtered my search results making it easy to find what I was looking for.

How does the new learning complicate, enrich, or support your original post from Week 1?

The new learning enriches my original post as it seems to have reshaped my aspirations to another dimension. I came across an article titled ” Empowering the Career Development of Persons with Disabilities.” that was quite enriching supporting my week one post adequately. This article buffers my passion for career development for persons with disabilities.  

How does the new information contribute to your ability to be a stronger advanced human services professional?

My search took me to a series of attractive articles that provided me with valuable information that will greatly enhance my Human Services career. As a human services professional in my projects, I plan to work on addressing the multidimensional nature of disability in my interventions on career development for persons with disabilities.
