Write an evaluation of a work of media, writing, or music. Select one of the three options:

  1. Evaluate a short story, essay, or poem
  2. Evaluate a movie, or TV show episode
  3. Evaluate a pop song, or pop album

 Process:

  •  Create an outline for an evaluation using a thesis statement that makes an evaluative claim and topic sentences that state reasons for your judgment.
    • Write the summary of your chosen piece to be incorporated into the introduction of your final draft.
    •  Structure and develop an essay as an evaluation, that supports your claims. Be sure to avoid an opinion piece.
    • Use your own observation and deductive thinking to create a thoughtful piece of evaluation.

Guidelines:

  • Structure your essay as an evaluation.

  • Your paper must have an explicit thesis statement and topic sentences.

  • Use an appropriate level of formality and use a reasonable tone.
  • Use only third person for this paper. Remove any instances of the pronouns: “I”, or “You.”
  • At least five paragraphs with a minimum of 600 words.
  • Clear judgement and evaluative stance on the work of your choice.
  • Make sure to not just evaluate the plot or content.
  • Use standard academic formatting for your final draft. Use the link on our course’s Canvas page for the Writing and Research Handbook.
  • Use at least 2-3 quotes from your primary source.
  • Include a works cited for the source you chose to evaluate.
