Looking at two specific authors, how has your understanding of nature and how humans interact with it been impacted?

Description and Purpose: For this assignment, you will be asked to answer a specific question regarding various texts. This will be a thesis-driven paper that requires you to put forward an argument for a specific, defensible answer. I also encourage you to use “I” to develop this paper. Talk about your responses to the text in the context of the prompt you choose to respond to and what about the text made you feel that way. Also integral to this assignment is the choice of quotes and evidence that you supply. To answer any of these questions, you will need to provide specific, textual evidence to help support your response.

Looking at two specific authors, how has your understanding of nature and how humans interact with it been impacted?

The purpose of this assignment is for you to practice analytical and critical thinking skills that we have talked about throughout the semester.

Question:

  1. Looking at two specific authors, how has your understanding of nature and how humans interact with it been impacted? What about these writings was so impactful, and how has it shaped you?

If you have other questions or texts you would like to analyze, please propose them as soon as possible.

Process: You will find it beneficial to have a thesis, or at the very least an idea, of how you want to respond to one of the specific questions. You might find it helpful to talk to me, your classmates, or someone at the University Writing Center (LIB 362) as you work on developing your thesis. I would also suggest going through your text and planning what textual evidence you might provide to support your answer.

Depending on how you prefer to write your essays, you might find it helpful to outline your paper first, or you might just jump right into developing your essay. You will want to provide strong topic sentences to serve as a roadmap for your audience as they read through your essay. Each piece of evidence should be appropriately responded to and analyzed, making clear connections to how it affects your stance on the piece of literature. You might also find it helpful to frame your essay as a response: use your personal reactions to the evidence that you’re highlighting to help you make your argument.

Audience: Your audience for this assignment is anyone who might come across this project who is interested in the piece of literature that you’re working on.

Details: For this assignment, you will need to do no outside research; instead, focus on the text. Draw your evidence from the piece that you are focusing on and cite each time you summarize, paraphrase, or directly quote from your source text. Also, this paper should be formatted per MLA requirements and should be as long as it needs to be, but no longer than 7 pages.
