How do Campbell’s and Young’s ideas mesh or conflict with your own?
Part of your task for this essay is to identify and evaluate the ideas presented by Kermit Campbell and Vershawn Ashanti Young and to assess how each essay speaks to you. Look at these two essays as voices in a conversation. Compare and/or contrast the two, and then try to formulate your own perspective. How do Campbell’s and Young’s ideas mesh or conflict with your own? Imagine yourself as the third voice in this conversation. Do you find flaws in their thinking? Or do you find ideas that you would like to bolster and bring to the forefront?
This assignment isn’t about summarizing. Rather, it goes directly to the questions raised by Campbell and Young: think about each essay and communicate your thoughts in a clear manner. That is, your thinking is the most important piece of this conversation. What do you have to say?
What new insights have these texts given me on language, writing, and education? Where do I agree? What have the authors overlooked? Does the text raise new questions?
This essay should be formatted properly for MLA: double-spaced, 12pt Times New Roman font, with a complete Works Cited page and properly formatted quotations. The two essays are primary sources and must be listed as such.
