Mass Incarceration

Bryan Stevenson discusses mass incarceration in several different points in his book, Just Mercy. What is the cause of mass incarceration and what are three serious effects of mass incarceration in the USA? Write a three-page essay (900 words) in which you argue what an important cause of mass incarceration is and what three effects are, using research from the articles you have read. Include an opposing view or alternative effect and show why your argument is stronger. You must cite at least four of the assigned readings for this exam as evidence for your argument.

Your essay must include:
a. An introduction that includes a thesis statement presenting your argument and the sub points you will develop in your essay.
b. A background paragraph that presents a cause of mass incarceration, including support from the articles.
c. Paragraphs that support each of the three sub points(effects) of your argument, using examples, quotations, and ideas from four articles, including signal phrases with authors and titles of the articles that are your sources of information, as well as in-text citations.
d. A paragraph that presents an opposing or alternative view, including support from the articles.
e. A paragraph that rebuilds your argument, including support from the articles.
f. A conclusion that restates your thesis and includes final evidence from your sources.
g. Effective transitions.
h. Correct MLA form, a Works Cited page, and use of signals phrases and in-text citations for each of the sources you use as evidence.
i. Correct grammar, sentence structure, and punctuation.
