Celebrity Case Study
The Celebrity Case Study paper is meant to be a culmination of all that students have learned over the course of the semester in Abnormal Psychology. It is also an opportunity to “put on your clinician cap” and think procedurally and conceptually in the way that a mental health professional thinks about individual cases.
Students should identify any celebrity (actor, singer, political figure, reality tv star, etc.) who either has publicly shared that they suffer from mental illness OR you believe suffers from a mental illness. Keep in mind, there may be more information available if the celebrity falls in the former category, but students are welcomed to compose a paper based on the latter.
In no more than four (4) pages, the paper should explicitly address the following sections:
- Identify the disorder(s) the celebrity meets criteria for. This will include a thorough and evidence-based (DSM-5) description of: the symptoms they display, the duration and/or onset of the symptoms, the impairment (occupational, social/ interpersonal, etc.) that they experience as a result of the symptoms. Make sure to reference DSM criteria and justify how the individual meets criteria based on available information.
- Describe causal and risk factors that you believe played part in the development and maintenance of the disorder for this individual. This should be an evidence-based discussion that includes theoretical perspectives (e.g., psychodynamic, cognitive, etc.) and empirically-supported risk factors as applied to available information about the person’s life.
- Make an evidence-based treatment recommendation for the individual. Based on the diagnosis, individual characteristics, and other relevant information, recommend and describe a specific treatment plan for the individual. The suggestion can be one psychotherapeutic approach or a combination, such as pharmacological plus therapy. But the description must be specific! For example, minimal credit will be given for recommending “medication”; instead students should specify precisely what medication (name and category) should be prescribed. In terms of psychotherapeutic approaches, again, specific type of approach and name of therapy should be included. Further, specific interventions should be mentioned (e.g., if systematic desensitization- describe teaching relaxation techniques- which ones?- and creating a fear hierarchy).
Points will be allocated for papers being well organized and written. Additionally, papers should be written and submitted in APA format. This means: Times New Roman, 12 pt font, double spaced, 1” margins. Further it must include in-text citations and References!
This is a research paper that requires inclusion of evidence-based information. To do this correctly students will need to cite outside resources such as the textbook, DSM, peer-reviewed articles, etc. Failure to cite information that is not original thought is plagiarism. So if you have any confusion or need clarification- ask!
The paper should be no more than four pages which is adequate space to succinctly and appropriately cover the sections required. **The instructor will stop reading at the end of the fourth page, so it is important to abide by this guideline to receive full credit.
The paper should be uploaded to the appropriate Blackboard assignment link (Assignments tab) as a .doc or .pdf file (NO others accepted).
