Local Government Encyclopedia Entry

Local Government Encyclopedia Entry – City (10% of grade):

Students will write a brief (maximum 1 page in 12-point Times New Roman font, double-spaced, 1” margin) political encyclopedia entry about a city in the State of California. In this brief encyclopedia entry, students should describe the political institutions, government structure, and policy issues affecting the city. When writing your entry, you may want to consider some (but not all) of the following questions:

Who governs this city (a mayor, a city council, etc.)? Are the political leaders in this city elected or appointed? If they are elected, how often are elections held? Are the political leaders term limited?
What are the major policy issues affecting this city? How is the city government planning to address these issues? (Or are they failing to address these issues?)
What does political participation look like in this city? Do many people vote? Are there many political activists involved in city politics? Are citizens and residents civically engaged?
Is there a dominant political ideology and/or political party in this city? For example, are most political leaders Democrats, Republicans, Independents, progressives, or conservatives? Are most citizens and residents Democrats, Republicans, Independents, progressives, or conservatives?
Students must consult, cite, and reference at least 2 sources for this assignment. You may want to consult the California League of Cities website which contains a list of cities in the state of California and information about the governance structures of each city: <link is hidden>
