The Courage to Teach

THE BLOG POST :
In The Courage to Teach (2017), Parker Palmer states that teachers have the power to create the conditions to either help students succeed or keep them from succeeding (p. 7). He also asserts that “good teaching comes from the identity and integrity of the teacher” (p. 10) and that it is “a daily exercise in vulnerability” (p. 17). In her TED talk The Power of Vulnerability, Brené Brown suggests that our response to vulnerability should be to let ourselves be seen, love with our whole hearts, practice gratitude and joy, and believe that we’re enough (2010).

If we transpose Palmer’s description of teaching onto leadership and accept that it is “the intentional act of creating those conditions” (p. 7) that either help or hinder the ability of employees to succeed, how have you seen leaders use their own vulnerability to create positive or negative conditions?
