Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes

Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes is written in a genre that was brand new when it was first published in 1605, during the Renaissance: the novel. In fact, the word “novel” comes from the Latin “novellus”, meaning “new and original, or young and fresh.” One of the “new” things about the novel was that it was a long narrative written in prose, rather than poetry (the complete text of Don Quixote is around 500 pages). Beyond that, though, there were a number of other things that made novels in general, and Don Quixote specifically “original” and “fresh”. Is there anything that you have observed while reading Don Quixote that stand out as different from any of the work we have read so far this semester.
