These two Case Studies come from a National Center on Case Studies. I think that a case study approach is very useful in applying knowledge and this is what makes….
Over time, there are numerous aspects that have dynamically changed the facets of this world, and the societies that exist within in. Amongst the pivotal aspects that have played a pivotal role in this regard, is the broadcast media. In return, what media has really effected and altered is the horizon of common/ general public, and assimilated them to the varying dynamics of this world, and the occurrences that take place within it. History of Broadcast Media The initiation of the broadcast media began with the experimentation of the radio broadcast, which at the initial level, comprised of only dashes and dots.
This radio broadcast, found its way in the domain of experimentation, in the year 1906, and in commercial domain in 1920. It was by 1930, that radio had become the new marvel for rendering entertainment to common households around the world, endorsing the same technology. Where, being able to send and receive audio signals was considered a marvel, the technology gurus were busy incorporating the aspect of visual content in this; and thus came the phenomenon of television.
Although, the idea of television had been revolving in the same arena, since the year 1870s; however, it only managed to become reality in the 1920s.
When the entire world relied and banked on the radios and televisions till the period from ‘20s, to ‘40s, it was not until 1950, when the color televisions were introduced in this arena. However, in the current circumstances, the history of broadcast media is not only confined to radio and television only; overtime, the aspect of online, digital media has substantially taken over all the marvels, and aspects of communication, which the world today knows as internet (Media: Broadcast Services, 2013).
What Is Ethical and What’s Not Ethical In the Broadcast Media It is the common notion that the ethical standards of the broadcast media are the self decorated documents of principles, which are seldom revered and adhered to. However, with respect to the ethical aspects of the broadcast media, it can be enunciated that it provides the common people with the right to information, news, happening and even free speech.
It is the duty and responsibility of media, to acquaint the general public with truth and the phenomenon going around in world. However, the prime dilemma resides with the fact that the aspect of unethical approaches in the broadcast media tend to surpass the ethical practices, and amongst those unethical approaches, the most common and most detrimental is that of manipulation of information, news, truth and misleading the common people, and subtly making them render their conviction and faith in the facts, which are far from being true.
News, facts and information can easily be manipulated, and becomes even easier, when your audience is naive about the subject under scrutiny. The media plays with the naive minds, and renders the facts in such a way, that their conviction easily gives in to those manipulated stories. Since the audience does not have any prior knowledge or record to verify the reports with; they can easily be manipulated according to the media’s will (Good, 2013).
It is not long ago since the consumers have become aware of the manipulation that is caused by media, and how they play with the mentality of common people; however, the workers had both the positions, they knew about these manipulations, and at the same time, a few of them were oblivious to it. Those who are/ were aware of the manipulations, either had their own interests associate with it, or were compelled by the aspects of job or money. Those who were oblivious to it were made to believe that what they are presenting or documenting, is actually true.
It is not a secret that the global media is controlled by a handful of parties, which includes both the private parties and even the political aspects. These parties have their own apparent, ostensible, and at the same time subtle interests associated with the phenomenon of the world. Their prime endeavor is to turn the favors their way, and gain maximum from what is happening around the world, even it take crafting a fake phenomenon, or manipulating the existing facts (McGrath, 2010).
Media is extremely powerful, and the approaches that it utilizes tend to become the powerful tools. It will not be inaccurate to state that the aspect of social experimentation gained its toll via the broadcast media. Numerous scholars are of the view that the underlying risks of the new technology, were anticipated, but never manifested or cogitated over; primarily because in every time period, the new and upcoming innovations were predicted, but were not witnessed until they were actually launched.
Henceforth, the forth the folks would little be aware of the underlying risks of the new technologies, as they would be too embroiled in assimilating themselves and their cognitive abilities to the existing ones. The aspect of safety of these industries can be taken in two aspects. First, the safety of information, data, policies, and even privacy of the other parties involved, and second, the safety (life) of the people, which are associated with these industries, such as journalists. Both these aspects have substantial dangers associated to them.
In the current aspects, when technology and competition has increased to unimaginable extent, the involved players are willing to go to any extent to beat the competition and win the audience over; which makes the aspect of record, data and privacy safety even more bleak. The changing dynamics of the world, the dangerous circumstances and the mixed views of people have put the lives of involved people at stake, such as a journalist covering a war zone; an entertainer who mistakenly or deliberately has hurt the sentiments of a particular community.
The media has not gained such toll and advancement in seclusion. Numerous other developments were also going on at the same time. Amongst these varying advancements, were the scientific technological advancements, which assisted the existence and progress of broadcast media, as well as the changing dynamics of the world, in political sphere, as well as infrastructural sphere (Gerdes, 2004).
